Video captured the moments after Los Angeles police fatally shot a dog that was wearing a New York Knicks<\/a> jersey as officers were responding to calls of a screaming woman \u2014 screaming which turned out to be a celebration of the Knicks winning the NBA championship<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Shortly after the Knicks won the NBA Finals on Saturday, the Los Angeles Police Department shot and killed the dog while responding to an unrelated incident, the LAPD said in a news release on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The LAPD said it was responding to a radio call about a \u201cscreaming woman\u201d in Canoga Park, a Los Angeles neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley. <\/p>\n

When the person reporting the screaming directed officers to an apartment unit, a resident opened the door to the responding officers, the LAPD said. Beside her was what the LAPD described as a \u201clarge dog\u201d barking at officers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe officers asked her to secure the dog, and the resident closed her door momentarily. She re-opened the door, and the dog exited the apartment,\u201d the release states. \u201cOnce outside of the apartment, the dog charged at one of the officers, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS).\u201d<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services was notified, responded to the scene, and took custody of the deceased dog, the LAPD said. The pup\u2019s owner was at scene and cooperated with the investigation, according to the release.<\/p>\n

The dog was a 2-year-old St. Bernard-golden retriever-poodle mix named Jameson, according to his owner, Marie Marseille. <\/p>\n

A video <\/a>that\u2019s been seen more than 15 million times on TikTok shows Marseille on the floor, lying over the deceased dog wearing a blue and orange t-shirt. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Knicks just won the championship,\u201d she wails. \u201cWe were just so happy. We just celebrating the Knicks.\u201d<\/p>\n

About half a dozen officers are seen in the video standing by the grieving woman.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is absolutely crazy,\u201d Marseille says. \u201cWe didn\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

People off camera are heard yelling at the officers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is f—ing pathetic when there\u2019s drug dealers, people stabbing each other outside,\u201d someone off-camera shouts.<\/p>\n

Marseille, 45, who is originally from Rockland County, New York, and a longtime Knicks fan, said she was shouting because she was celebrating the Knicks winning. <\/p>\n

\u201cI started screaming. I was like \u2018The Knicks are champions! The Knicks just won!\u2019 she said. \u201cIt was so euphoric.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Knicks won against the San Antonio spurs in the NBA Finals Game 5 on Saturday, delivering New York its first NBA championship in 53 years. <\/p>\n

Marseille, a nurse, said she could not remember if Jameson barked, but that he \u201cgenerally does not bark when there\u2019s a knock or a ring at the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said when she tried to push Jameson back to speak to the officers, Jameson snuck past her legs and ran outside. Within seconds, she said she saw Jameson get shot twice. She said he was breathing for a few seconds before he passed away.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t understand. I don\u2019t understand it. I don\u2019t get it,\u201d she said through tears. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t doing anything, he didn\u2019t do anything. I know he didn\u2019t. I know he didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marseille repeatedly said that Jameson has \u201cnever once\u201d shown aggression towards anyone.<\/p>\n

A GoFundMe for the dog\u2019s cremation fees has raised more than $117,000 as of Tuesday. <\/p>\n

\u201cJameson was 2 years old, and he was taken from us too soon,\u201d the GoFundMe page reads. \u201cAnyone who\u2019s met Jameson would tell you he is the sweetest boy in the world.<\/p>\n

Marseille said she plans to donate some of the money or start a nonprofit in Jameson\u2019s name. She added that she hopes Jameson\u2019s death will lead to reform within the LAPD.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis could have been prevented. I really truly believe it could have been,\u201d she said. \u201cWhy is the gun the first option? I don\u2019t get it.\u201d<\/p>\n
