After Coco Gauff denied having turned down an invitation from Serena Williams to play together in the tennis legend’s much-anticipated return to the WTA tour, Serena explained this Tuesday (16) that she didn’t know her compatriot was available.<\/p>\n

“I thought Coco<\/a> was more focused on playing singles,” said the former world number 1 to Flashscore right after her defeat in the WTA 500 debut in Berlin.<\/p>\n

“I should have done better research on who was playing doubles,” she continued. “It would have been fun to play with Coco. Maybe I’ll call her next time.”<\/p>\n

Earlier, Gauff said she would play doubles with Serena<\/a> anytime: “She just has to ask.”<\/p>\n

Serena, 44,\u00a0was defeated in the doubles draw<\/a> in Berlin this Tuesday, playing alongside the Czech\u00a0Karolina Muchova<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This was the tennis legend’s second match since her return to the courts.
