{"id":708923,"date":"2026-06-17T05:33:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T05:33:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/708923\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T05:33:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T05:33:14","slug":"us-attorney-for-minnesota-charges-15-anti-ice-protesters-alleging-ties-to-antifa-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/708923\/","title":{"rendered":"US Attorney for Minnesota charges 15 anti-ICE protesters, alleging ties to antifa groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Federal prosecutors in Minnesota have charged 15 people allegedly tied to two Minneapolis-based antifa groups.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen for the District of Minnesota and Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Michael McCarthy announced the charges during a press conference late Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/kstp.com\/kstp-news\/top-news\/protesters-sprayed-with-chemical-outside-st-paul-courthouse-during-antifa-case-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Protesters sprayed with chemical outside St. Paul courthouse during antifa case hearing<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Officials say the case involves multiple defendants accused of conspiracy to impede or injure federal officers and related crimes that \u201cviolently oppose immigration law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>In the past 24 hours, Rosen said most were arrested in a federal operation, but two are not in custody.<\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/kstp.com\/kstp-news\/local-news\/minnesota-man-charged-after-he-reportedly-called-for-others-to-attack-federal-agents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Minnesota man charged after he reportedly called for others to attack federal agents<\/a><\/p>\n<p>McCarthy said the investigation leading to these charges found \u201cextensive planning, material support and coordinated attacks against federal personnel and facilities.\u201d He also called the charges \u201can important milestone\u201d for maintaining the rule of law and stopping violence against law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ alleges that the 15 defendants are members and associates of Direct Action Minnesota. They face charges ranging from conspiracy to impede a federal officer to stalking, threats, solicitation to commit a violent crime, assaulting a federal officer and destruction of government property.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0616-ROSEN-DOJ-ICE-CHARGES-KSTP_BCMP01_mxf_00.09.15.28-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3954538\"  \/>Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Michael McCarthy announces anti-ICE charges on June 16, 2026. (KSTP-TV)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor those who choose to threaten or harm federal officers, the Department of Justice will hold you accountable,\u201d said Rosen. \u201cThe direct actions alleged in the indictment are un-American. And they will be met with swift justice.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When asked about other cases against protesters being dismissed recently, Rosen said, \u201cI don\u2019t think any cases have failed in any way,\u201d before adding, \u201cthe evidence will prove it all out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, President Donald Trump signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/09\/designating-antifa-as-a-domestic-terrorist-organization\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/09\/designating-antifa-as-a-domestic-terrorist-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">an executive order<\/a> designating antifa as a domestic terrorist organization. Rosen says many of the defendants charged Tuesday identify as members of that organization.<\/p>\n<p>When asked several times if any agents were injured, prosecutors refused to answer \u2014 only saying it would be made clear through the court process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors were also pressed on what antifa is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is Antifa goes beyond, goes beyond, I think, the scope of what this indictment is. But what we can tell you is that we have plenty of people that self-identify in that way, and you might want to ask them that,\u201d Rosen said, adding about whether simply being connected to the movement is a crime, \u201cIt\u2019s a crime to conspire for the purpose of impeding or injuring federal officers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a crime to conspire together in order to commit crimes of violence. It\u2019s a crime to get together to stalk. It\u2019s a crime to get together to make threats. It\u2019s a crime to get together to assault federal officers. It\u2019s a crime to get together to distract to destroy federal property,\u201d Rosen said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Given the attack and assault allegations mentioned during the news conference and in the indictment \u2014 including, among other allegations, ice chunks being thrown at agents and a defendant sideswiping an agent in their vehicle, causing a collision \u2014 reporter Ben Henry pressed Rosen about why none of that physical evidence was shared.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Henry: What evidence do you have that these assaults and attacks took place?<\/p>\n<p>Rosen: We have video evidence, we have eyewitness testimony, and all of that evidence will roll out.<\/p>\n<p>Henry: Why not share it in the press conference today, like you did with a few still images? Why not show some of these attacks today?<\/p>\n<p>Rosen: We\u2019re showing what we think is necessary in order to get the story out and I recommend that you read the indictment.<\/p>\n<p>One of the people charged is Erik Davis, a professor at Macalester College in St. Paul. A statement from the school can be read below:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMacalester College is aware that professor Erik Davis is among fifteen individuals charged in connection with an ongoing federal investigation. The College does not comment on pending legal proceedings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Defense attorneys react<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s politically motivated,\u201d said James Cook, the defense attorney for one of the defendants, Natasha Rakotz.<\/p>\n<p>According to the formal indictment, prosecutors accuse the defendants of using encrypted chat apps to coordinate their activities like stalking ICE agents in person and online, creating blockades to obstruct operations and \u201cde-arresting\u201d people already in custody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a fascist prosecution.
