recently signed<\/a> UFL receiver Hakeem Butler and UFL cornerback Sean Fresch Jr., was asked on Wednesday whether Denver\u2019s scouts have made a concerted effort to target UFL players.<\/p>\n\u201cI asked the question of the scouts the other day like, \u2018UFL or CFL? Where are we getting the better [players]?\u2019\u201d Payton told reporters. \u201cI don\u2019t know how many years in, five, six, seven with the UFL, and I think it\u2019s kind of becoming that, \u2018OK, where\u2019s the next market?\u2019 They\u2019re getting developed somewhere. Where are they if they\u2019re not in our league? I think to their league\u2019s credit, it\u2019s helping us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Technically, the UFL has been around for only three years. It arose from a merger of the XFL and the USFL.<\/p>\n
Payton also was asked whether it helps players with limited NFL experience to get UFL reps.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, they don\u2019t have a choice,\u201d Payton said. \u201cBut yes. Do I think guys can go get exposure, get experience, get confidence? History has said there are Hall of Famers now for our league that played up in the CFL.\u201d<\/p>\n
The NFL doesn\u2019t have a developmental league because, frankly, it didn\u2019t turn a profit (or enough of one) with NFL Europe. If it had, NFL Europe would have endured. <\/p>\n
Follow the money.
