SOUTHAMPTON, New York \u2014 Round 1 of the 126th U.S. Open resumed at 9:05 a.m. ET after a two-hour delay due to dense fog blanketing the back nine.<\/p>\n

The delay began a half-hour after the first groups teed off at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island.<\/p>\n

Players were held in place for fifteen minutes, then brought into the clubhouse, though practice facilities remained open.<\/p>\n

Only 17 golfers were able to tee off their first round before the delay, with eight tied at the top of the leaderboard at even par. <\/p>\n

With high winds and a chance of rain already expected, this adds another layer to an already challenging start.<\/p>\n

Officials said Wednesday that Thursday\u2019s forecasted wind gusts over 30 miles per hour would be \u201cproblematic\u201d for play<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The delay will push back the starts for the favorites, including Rory McIlroy (previously scheduled to go off at 7:52 off the 10th hole) and Scottie Scheffler (previously scheduled to start at 8:14 off the first hole).<\/p>\n
