{"id":711831,"date":"2026-06-18T16:53:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T16:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/711831\/"},"modified":"2026-06-18T16:53:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T16:53:11","slug":"hundreds-of-mysterious-quakes-have-been-detected-deep-under-antarctica-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/711831\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds of Mysterious Quakes Have Been Detected Deep Under Antarctica : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If a movie opened with scientists discovering hundreds of earthquakes deep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-discover-a-vast-structure-hiding-beneath-antarcticas-ice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">under Antarctica<\/a> \u2013 in a place where they&#8217;re not supposed to happen, geologically speaking \u2013 you might expect the next scene to involve aliens, ancient monsters, or something equally dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t science fiction though: A team from the US and Spain has identified more than 500 deep earthquakes beneath the continent, and they are trying to find explanations that fit the data.<\/p>\n<p>The region doesn&#8217;t run across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/first-signatures-of-a-future-tectonic-split-are-bubbling-up-in-zambia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">any tectonic plate boundaries<\/a>, which typically drive the friction that causes earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, this deep seismic activity occurs when softer, warmer rock heats and bends the rigid, brittle crust from below.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/EarthquakeMap.jpg\" alt=\"Earthquake map\" width=\"642\" height=\"914\" class=\"wp-image-205500 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A map and cross-section of the detected quakes under David Glacier (DG). (Ho et al., Science, 2026)<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, this study shows that these <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intraplate_earthquake\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intraplate earthquakes<\/a> are indeed occurring beneath Antarctica, matching <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.tecto.2022.229360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">other puzzling outbreaks<\/a> of seismic activity in places such as Afghanistan, Morocco, and Romania.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Intraplate earthquakes (events that occur within plate interiors, far from active margins) challenge the traditional plate tectonic paradigm, which indicates that plate interiors should experience little deformation,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.aea9895\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> the researchers in their published paper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Intermediate-depth earthquakes (IDEs, &gt;70 km) within intraplate settings are even more difficult to explain because high-temperature and high-pressure conditions in the upper mantle are not conducive to brittle failure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/EarthquakeChart.jpg\" alt=\"Earthquake cut out\" width=\"642\" height=\"473\" class=\"wp-image-205502 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Temperature and pressure are likely to be causing the earthquakes, the researchers determined. (Ho et al., Science, 2026)<\/p>\n<p>The team gathered data from 49 seismic monitoring stations across East Antarctica, then used a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deep_learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">deep learning AI technique<\/a> to sift through it and identify earthquakes amid the general noise.<\/p>\n<p>By analyzing faster primary waves (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P_wave\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">p-waves<\/a>) that move through any material and slower secondary waves (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S_wave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">s-waves<\/a>) that only move through solid, not molten, rock, it&#8217;s possible to detect rock-fracture events and pinpoint their locations.<\/p>\n<p>That gave the researchers a total of 510 IDEs, clustered beneath the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Glacier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">David Glacier<\/a>, bunching at depths between 100 and 150 kilometers (62 and 93 miles).<\/p>\n<p>The local magnitudes of these quakes were between 1.6 and 3.5 \u2013 relatively small in earthquake terms.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1781801590_839_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We identified and characterized intraplate IDEs beneath East Antarctica using an automatic deep-learning earthquake detection package enhanced by transfer learning, a technique that leverages previously trained models to solve new, related tasks more efficiently,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.aea9895\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>This adds to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/antarctica-is-being-rumbled-by-hidden-earthquakes-we-never-knew-about-east-seismic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">other studies<\/a> showing that Antarctica isn&#8217;t quite as quiet, seismologically speaking, as was previously thought.<\/p>\n<p>But then the next question is, what&#8217;s driving these quakes?<\/p>\n<p>While the area isn&#8217;t on a tectonic plate boundary, it is close to a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plate_tectonics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">lithospheric boundary<\/a>, where two slabs of rock with different densities come together. Specifically, the thick, cold East Antarctica slab and the thinner, hotter West Antarctica slab.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-201722 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The coming together makes the rock structure vulnerable at this point, posit the researchers. Combined with the stress of the hot mantle pushing up and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/icebergs-are-transforming-deep-sea-ecosystems-scientists-discover\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the cold glacier<\/a> pushing down, this could explain the earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This creates a steep lithospheric strength gradient, and it <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/2015GC005937\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has been suggested<\/a> that stress concentrations along such boundaries can lead to intraplate seismicity at the edge of the stronger lithospheric block,&#8221; the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.aea9895\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In other words: It&#8217;s not aliens or ancient monsters, probably.<\/p>\n<p>These findings give geologists a better understanding of the pushing and pulling that goes on deep underground and far from tectonic plate boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>They also highlight the many different ways that earthquakes <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.tecto.2008.05.024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">can be triggered<\/a> \u2013 even in unexpected places, by processes that may have been difficult to detect until recently.<\/p>\n<p>Some mysteries remain: The &#8216;bending&#8217; processes explain why the earthquakes occur so deep, but not why they are clustered only beneath David Glacier.
