{"id":712485,"date":"2026-06-19T00:00:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T00:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/712485\/"},"modified":"2026-06-19T00:00:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T00:00:08","slug":"building-u-s-mexico-partnerships-ucla","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/712485\/","title":{"rendered":"Building U.S.\u2013Mexico partnerships | UCLA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the United States approaching its 250th birthday, 140 leaders from across business, government and academia in both the U.S. and Mexico gathered in downtown Los Angeles earlier this month to address timely questions about the two nations\u2019 relationship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica at 250: Mexican-American Leadership and the Future of the U.S.\u2013Mexico Partnership,\u201d convened June 3 at the City Club by the <a href=\"https:\/\/latino.ucla.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute<\/a> and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamlc.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> American Mexican Leadership Council<\/a> focused on the deep economic, cultural and civic ties connecting the countries \u2014 and the communities that help sustain them.<\/p>\n<p>The event opened with remarks from Sergio Gonzales, founding president and CEO of the AMLC, LPPI director <a href=\"https:\/\/latino.ucla.edu\/person\/amada-armenta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amada Armenta<\/a> and UCLA Dean of Social Sciences <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.ucla.edu\/our-dean\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Abel Valenzuela Jr.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny conversation about the future of the United States must include the U.S.\u2013Mexico relationship and the contributions of Mexican Americans, who shape the economic, civic, [and] cultural wealth of the state and nation,\u201d Valenzuela said. <\/p>\n<p>The event featured two panels and a fireside chat exploring the binational ties and how Latino communities are essential to the economic power, mobility, culture, food and identity that define that relationship. Highlights included a presentation from <a href=\"https:\/\/gps.ucsd.edu\/faculty-directory\/rafael-fernandez-de-castro.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rafael Fern\u00e1ndez de Castro,<\/a> a professor and U.S.\u2013Mexico relations expert at UC San Diego, who reframed the binational relationship not as a foreign policy challenge but as the management of a deep and durable economic partnership. <\/p>\n<p>The second panel, \u201cBuilding Prosperity in Uncertain Times: Mexican-American Economic Power and the Road Ahead,\u201d featured remarks from UCLA alumnus <a href=\"https:\/\/inclusiveaction.org\/team-25\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rudy Espinoza,<\/a> who is president and CEO of the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/inclusiveaction.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Inclusive Action for the City,<\/a> alongside other LA leaders in business and advocacy. The panel included a discussion of the upcoming Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 and the importance of uplifting Latino small businesses during that pivotal moment for the city, ensuring communities are included in the economic growth the Games will bring. <\/p>\n<p>A fireside chat complemented the event with a conversation featuring panelists from the food, entertainment and fashion worlds.
