{"id":712725,"date":"2026-06-19T02:41:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T02:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/712725\/"},"modified":"2026-06-19T02:41:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T02:41:10","slug":"brooklines-rainbow-turkey-may-miss-some-of-pride-month-for-damage-repairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/712725\/","title":{"rendered":"Brookline\u2019s rainbow turkey may miss some of Pride Month for damage repairs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">A rainbow-painted fiberglass turkey in Brookline might miss some of Pride Month this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">That\u2019s because the sculpture is damaged and will soon be removed from its perch near the Washington Square T stop so the town can assess its condition, according to Gillian Jackson, the administrator for the Brookline Commission for the Arts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">\u201cIt is a little sad, you know, it is Pride month, but I\u2019ll be very happy to see it repaired and restored,\u201d said Jane Kim-Testa, the artist who designed the sculpture as one of Brookline\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2024\/02\/27\/metro\/brookline-turkey-sculptures\/?p1=BGSearch_Overlay_Results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Turkeys Around Town<\/a>, a set of 10 turkey sculptures installed in 2024 using the town\u2019s COVID relief funds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">Kim-Testa\u2019s turkey was still in Washington Square on Thursday morning, but its head and body tilted backward, resting on the ground. Its legs were still anchored to the sculpture\u2019s base, but they were almost entirely severed from the rest of the bird. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"img-O5UI7XG2UFRQFDB6BLGZBSU3XM-image\" alt=\"Damage to a fiberglass turkey sculpture in Brookline was visible on Thursday morning.\" class=\"height_a width_full invisible width_full--mobile width_full--tablet-only\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/O5UI7XG2UFRQFDB6BLGZBSU3XM.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>Damage to a fiberglass turkey sculpture in Brookline was visible on Thursday morning.Ariela Lopez for The Boston Globe<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">Titled \u201cLove is Love is Love,\u201d the turkey\u2019s design celebrates Massachusetts\u2019s LGBTQ+ community. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">\u201cAs a queer person myself, I\u2019m very proud of the fact that Massachusetts was the first state in the United States to legalize same-sex marriage,\u201d Kim-Testa said in a phone interview Thursday. \u201cI was like, it would be nice to have a rainbow-Pride-something in the town, just to be like \u2018you\u2019re welcome here\u2019 to other queer people in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">In addition to painting the turkey in the colors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhewitt.org\/2023\/06\/20\/intersex-inclusive-progress-pride-flag-at-the-smithsonian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">intersex-inclusive progress Pride flag<\/a>, Kim-Testa decorated the bird with various translations of the word \u201clove.\u201d They said they used Brookline\u2019s demographic data to decide which languages to use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">Kim-Testa learned of the damage  from a friend on June 9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">Frank Jefferson, who owns Brookline Frames on Beacon Street, said he noticed the damage last week, when the area experienced extremely hot weather. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">\u201cI don\u2019t know if it was heat or vandalism,\u201d Jefferson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">Brookline police did not respond to questions about whether they\u2019re investigating the damage to the sculpture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">Kim-Testa does not believe the turkey was deliberately harmed. They said it had been previously damaged during transport to Washington Square, and it was wobbly from the start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\">\u201cIt probably was just that the weather did its thing,\u201d Kim-Testa said. \u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of windy days lately.
