{"id":712867,"date":"2026-06-19T04:19:20","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T04:19:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/712867\/"},"modified":"2026-06-19T04:19:20","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T04:19:20","slug":"john-byrne-calls-superman-run-worst-experience-of-his-career-superman-homepage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/712867\/","title":{"rendered":"John Byrne Calls Superman Run \u201cWorst Experience\u201d of His Career \u2013 Superman Homepage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Legendary comic book creator John Byrne, whose new X-Men project \u201cElsewhen\u201d hits shelves next week, had some sharp words about his famous 1980s stint on Superman \u2014 a run that was so high-profile it landed on the cover of \u201cTime\u201d magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the cultural impact, Byrne says the whole experience was poisoned by broken promises from DC Comics. \u201cDC lied to me at every turn,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/john-byrne-returns-to-x-men-1236624739\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. \u201cThe whole project, which should have been a dream come true, was just an endless stream of disappointments and frustration and ultimately I quit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a moment of career retrospection, he even floated an alternate history: he wishes he\u2019d taken Batman instead, leaving Superman to Frank Miller \u2014 who was, at the same time, busy producing the landmark works \u201cDark Knight Returns\u201d and \u201cBatman: Year One\u201d. It\u2019s a tantalizing what-if for comics fans.<\/p>\n<p>Byrne, who turns 76 in July, is characteristically blunt about how it all went wrong.
