\u201cHe came up on the blind side of one of the turbines, and when I first saw him, I thought I was seeing things,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n
The shark, which the crew estimates was about 15 feet long, circled near the 30-foot fishing vessel, giving everyone on board a rare view of the apex predator.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou could almost hear the person next to you breathing,\u201d Davis said. \u201cEverybody was in awe. It was one of those moments where it felt like you were in a movie.\u201d<\/p>\n
Davis said he quickly alerted charter owner Bradley Gray, who initially doubted the sighting.<\/p>\n
\u201cA big wake came up, and Kenny heard it,\u201d Gray said. \u201cWe looked over, and Kenny said, \u2018That\u2019s a great white.\u2019 I said, \u2018Nah, man, you\u2019re seeing things.\u2019 Then sure enough, he swam right by the boat.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gray said the shark appeared to be nearly half the length of the vessel.<\/p>\n
While the encounter was exciting, Davis said it also served as a reminder of the shark’s place at the top of the marine food chain.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I were to fall in that water, I\u2019m not at the top of the food chain anymore,\u201d he said. \u201cI can\u2019t outsmart that shark. That\u2019s where respect comes in.\u201d<\/p>\n
The sighting quickly drew attention online, with many commenters saying they had spent years on the water without ever seeing a great white shark at such close range.<\/p>\n
For Davis, the experience was one he will not soon forget.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnother reason why we pray, I guess, is to see things like that,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a true blessing. I don\u2019t know how else to explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n
