But advocates say challenges behind that closure extend far beyond a single community.

“We view this really as what we could call a canary in the coal mine scenario,” Lauren LaPine-Ray, vice president of Policy and Rural Health and executive director of the Center of Rural Excellence for the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA), said.

LaPine-Ray described the situation faced by rural hospitals as a “perfect storm.”

According to the MHA, rural hospitals are facing declining patient volumes, rising healthcare costs, workforce shortages and reimbursement challenges that make it increasingly difficult to maintain services.

Sturgis Hospital’s emergency department volume declined by 13% over the last two years, all while hospitals continue to face increasing costs for staffing, technology, pharmaceuticals and patient care, LaPine-Ray said.

“We do think this is a much broader crisis at this point than just one isolated incident,” she added.

Healthcare providers in rural communities say the impact extends beyond the hospital itself.

Jade Klingler, vice president and nurse practitioner at Revolution Health, says healthcare organizations are already discussing how to address gaps in care created by the closure.

Without a local hospital, patients may have to travel for services such as imaging, laboratory work and specialty care.

“What if mom or dad doesn’t have a car?” Klingler said, pointing to transportation challenges often faced by rural residents.

Advocates say the financial pressures affecting rural hospitals are likely to continue without broader policy changes.

“Once a hospital closes, it doesn’t come back,” Dianne Byrum, state director for Protect Our Care Michigan, said.

Byrum says rural hospitals often serve as economic and healthcare lifelines for their communities.

Closures can affect not only healthcare access but also local jobs, economic activity and future growth in rural communities.

Byrum also expressed concerns about the impact of federal Medicaid funding reductions, arguing that cuts could place additional strain on hospitals already operating on thin margins.

“We’ve seen now over 1,000 hospitals or their clinics or nursing homes or specific services that hospitals provide close,” Byrum said.

Healthcare leaders and advocates may disagree on the causes and solutions, but many agree that rural communities face growing challenges in maintaining healthcare access close to home.

State lawmakers are considering several proposals aimed at supporting healthcare access, including legislation designed to reduce healthcare costs and direct funding toward rural healthcare services.

For communities like Sturgis, however, the discussion is no longer theoretical.

As residents prepare for life without a local hospital, healthcare leaders say the closure highlights broader questions about the future of rural healthcare across Michigan.

STURGIS, Mich. — As Sturgis Hospital closes, there have been concerns raised over healthcare access in southwest Michigan.…

[59
97,252,253
post-713321","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health-care","tag-health","tag-health-care","tag-healthcare
["GET
