What began as a routine surgery soon spiraled into a devastating ordeal for one woman who has endured more than 80 medical procedures and over a decade of pain and uncertainty.<\/p>\n

Wioletta Wyrwol\u2019s journey began in 2013, when she underwent an operation to address an issue with her right wrist. It wasn\u2019t long before Wyrwol realized something had gone very wrong. Her arm swelled to an alarming size, while her fingers gradually began to darken and eventually turned black. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a constant burning pain, swelling, discoloration, hypersensitivity, and loss of function in my arm,\u201d Wyrwol told Newsweek.<\/p>\n

Wyrwol was eventually diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome <\/a>(CRPS), a rare chronic pain condition that typically affects a limb after an injury, surgery, stroke, or heart attack.<\/p>\n

CRPS is estimated to affect only a small percentage of people\u2014just a few cases per 100,000 each year\u2014making it relatively uncommon. The exact cause isn\u2019t fully understood, but it is thought to involve abnormal responses of the nervous system, in which pain signals become amplified and persist long after the original injury has healed.<\/p>\n

Wyrwol\u2019s battle with CRPS<\/a> has been long and difficult. \u201cOver the years, I underwent more than 80 surgeries and countless treatments in an attempt to stop the disease,\u201d she said. \u201cDespite every effort, my condition continued to deteriorate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eventually, after years of unbearable pain and a significantly diminished quality of life, she made the difficult decision to have her right forearm amputated in 2019. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was one of the hardest decisions of my life, but also the only chance to move forward,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Though she was fitted with a prosthetic limb, the adjustment was significant.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdapting was challenging both physically and emotionally,\u201d Wyrwol said. \u201cSimple tasks suddenly became difficult, and I had to learn new ways of doing almost everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite her world being turned upside down, Wyrwol has since regained her confidence and independence in the face of adversity. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy prosthetic arm helps me in daily life, but more importantly, it symbolizes resilience and the fact that I refused to give up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Yet the reality is that her health battles have continued in the years since, and more difficult decisions could lie ahead. <\/p>\n

\u201cI continue to live with CRPS and chronic pain,\u201d she said. \u201cRecently, I have also faced serious complications affecting my leg and foot, creating new challenges and uncertainties.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wyrwol is sharing her story in the hope that it will both educate and inspire others. <\/p>\n

\u201cI want to raise awareness about CRPS, challenge stereotypes about disability, and give hope to others who may be facing their own struggles,\u201d she said. \u201cIf my story helps even one person keep going, then sharing it is worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though nothing about her future is guaranteed, she hopes others can draw strength from the resilience she continues to show in the face of such difficulties. <\/p>\n
