Just three weeks into its theatrical run, The Mandalorian & Grogu<\/a> dropped out of the top five movies at the box office \u2014 a clear indication that the franchise is no longer the cultural juggernaut it once was. As a lifelong fan, its inevitable decline has been sad to witness. I vividly remember my excitement when it was announced that Disney would continue the saga with Episode VII, but since then, only a few Star Wars projects have lived up to the franchise’s legacy.<\/p>\n

As Star Wars approaches its 50th anniversary in 2027<\/a>, Disney faces a major dilemma: how can they ensure it will survive another half-century? A hard reboot with a full canon reset feels unthinkable. But when you honestly consider the state of the franchise, the idea isn’t that wild. In fact, a strategically executed reboot might be the most effective way to restore George Lucas’<\/a> universe in the Disney era. <\/p>\n

Why You Should Trust Me: I’ve spent my life immersed in Star Wars and I know the universe like it’s the back of my hand, from the Expanded Universe and obscure lore to ongoing releases by Disney. I know how boundless the universe can be when it’s operating on all cylinders, so I recognize the valid concerns many have raised in recent years, as previous books and comics were deemed non-canon, only to be replaced with media that introduced brand-new problems. As a movie fan, I’ve also watched major franchises reinvent themselves successfully, and I’ve seen others wait far too long to course\u2011correct. Years ago, it would’ve felt sacrilegious to suggest that Star Wars should start over in the same way that Spider-Man or Superman have \u2014 but as much as I wish there were an easier path forward for the franchise, the case for a full reboot is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.<\/p>\n

Recast Iconic Characters \u2014 Although Disney has been shy about recasting iconic characters since Solo: A Star Wars Story didn’t do well at the box office, a reboot of the franchise would be a chance to introduce new faces to roles that have been played exclusively by individual actors. The recasting of Han Solo or Senator Bail Organa wouldn’t feel strange and out of place \u2014 it would be necessary.<\/p>\n

New Versions of the Prequels<\/p>\n

It wouldn’t be hard for a rebooted Prequel Trilogy to right the wrongs that the fanbase still talks about today. Although the three movies have aged fairly well with a new generation of fans, it’s easy to see the potential of a reimagined Prequel Trilogy, without awkward romance, indulgent CGI, or the comedic relief of Jar Jar Binks.<\/p>\n

If Disney managed to pull it off, a fresh take on the prequels could be a genuine home run, revitalizing the franchise while offering a new perspective on a story everyone already knows. A reimagined prequel era could even lean into political intrigue with sharper, more grounded writing, echoing Disney’s rare critical success: Andor. It could also finally give the Clone Wars the cinematic treatment they never truly received besides a few minutes in Revenge of the Sith. It always felt like a real missed opportunity that The Clone Wars was the most we saw of the conflict, but after years of exploring the era in animation, there’s clearly a deep mine of material to explore.<\/p>\n

Preserve the Original Trilogy’s Legacy<\/p>\n

When the prequels came out, fans criticized them for infringing upon the legacy of the Original Trilogy, and when the sequels came out, it happened again. Every addition to the 50-year-old canon, including sequels, spin-offs, and animated series has had to risk diluting Episodes IV, V, and VI \u2014 which has unfortunately happened too many times already, between the rise of a new tyrannical force in the galaxy and the return of Emperor Palpatine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ironically, the best way to preserve the legacy of the originals might just be to reboot the whole franchise. Instead of building new stories on top of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, a reboot would reimagine the same characters and storylines within a fresh continuity, and Disney wouldn\u2019t step on sacred ground in the process. By starting fresh, the Original Trilogy would become a historical artifact rather than an eternal narrative anchor. Disney would be able to honor the originals by letting them stand alone, while carving out a new identity for the future.<\/p>\n

Filmmakers Could Bring Their Own Creative Vision<\/p>\n

When director J.J. Abrams worked on the Sequel Trilogy, he felt the need to make nostalgia a major focal point, sometimes at the detriment of the story. I’m not necessarily suggesting that new writers and directors should adhere to a consistent tone or visual style like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On the contrary, filmmakers would have the freedom to reinterpret iconic elements without having to adhere to certain aesthetics or rules. Not only would a reboot lessen the likelihood of continuity errors \u2014 it would empower creative teams to showcase their unrestrained vision for the franchise.<\/p>\n

After so many years, it’s a daunting challenge for new viewers to get caught up with all the movies and shows on Disney+, so resetting the stage at square one is likely to help encourage people to become fans. Something similar can be said for Star Wars. When Disney acquired the franchise, the studio set out to generate new content at a rapid pace, but now there’s so much to consume, it’s become overwhelming.<\/p>\n

A hard reboot frees Star Wars from all of it. Every movie, show, book, comic, video game, and other piece of media becomes unnecessary. That means there would be no more retcons to explain inconsistencies<\/a>, or timeline gymnastics to justify character appearances. Instead, Disney could set in motion a streamlined, modern continuity designed to last for decades. The franchise becomes accessible again, and it wouldn’t feel like homework to understand a show like Ahsoka or The Acolyte.<\/p>\n

Unlimited Potential of New Lore<\/p>\n

When filming for The Force Awakens began, I was swept up in the sequel’s sense of limitless possibility. It was arguably more fun to watch set photos and concept art come out online than it was to sit in the theater watching the final product. No one knew who Snoke was, or what happened to Luke Skywalker, and those mysteries were just the tip of the iceberg.<\/p>\n

A reboot could recapture that energy, incorporating new lore inspired by Lucas’ ideas throughout his films. And guess what? Star Wars: Visions has already done it, so there’s precedent for it to happen on a cinematic scale. We could witness new Force traditions besides the Jedi and the Sith<\/a>, and new political landscapes besides the Empire and the Republic. For such a vast galaxy, modern Star Wars often feels small, because it keeps exploring the same basic settings and dynamics. But a reboot could take advantage of the universe’s unlimited potential.<\/p>\n

And sure, Dave Filoni is a talented storyteller, but at this point, the connections are causing more harm than good. New stories have become so dependent on these shows that casual viewers are left feeling like they missed homework. Star Wars used to feel like it was for everyone, but now it feels more like an exclusive club, where only a subset of the fanbase gets to experience it. And that’s a shame.<\/p>\n

A hard reboot of Star Wars would inevitably be controversial, and it wouldn’t be all smooth sailing \u2014 but it might also be the smartest strategy to secure the franchise’s future. A bold reset led by new filmmakers, grounded in respect for the original six films, could be exactly what the saga needs after its recent decline with Disney.
