The reverse is the case\u00a0in the Southern Hemisphere, which has its longest day on December 21.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The prehistoric megalithic stone circle on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire in southwest <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/united-kingdom\/t-60783992\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">England<\/a> appears to have been built to align with the sun&#8217;s path on these days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"77643475\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/77643475_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"The sun rises through the stones as people gather at Stonehenge, Wiltshire, during sunrise on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. The events have gathered momentum since.<\/p>\n<p>Parking is pre-paid, booking-only, and in 2026 the fees rose another 5 pounds to 25 pounds (roughly \u20ac28.20 or $33.20). Spaces sold out, and English Heritage warned people not to park on the roadside of the A303 or the other busy trunk roads passing the site \u2014 a key route connecting the southwest to London \u2014 saying cars would be towed.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, special buses from Salisbury ferried\u00a0other revelers to the site.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"77643427\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/77643427_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"Revelers gather at the ancient stone circle Stonehenge to celebrate the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, near Salisbury, England, Saturday, June 20, 2026.\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>&#8216;And oh, how they danced, the little children of Stonehenge,&#8217; if you&#8217;ll permit us to plagiarize a poetImage: Alberto Pezzali\/AP Photo\/picture alliance<\/p>\n<p>What else is happening on summer solstice in Europe?<\/p>\n<p>The weather surely fits the bill on the first day of the astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere, with the UK and much of Europe facing severe heat warnings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures were comparatively modest in the Salisbury area by national standards on Sunday, with highs of 29 degrees Celsius (84.2 Fahrenheit) forecast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In France, though, the government <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/france-bans-alcohol-during-fete-de-la-musique-amid-heat-wave\/a-77639233\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">forbade the public consumption of alcohol<\/a> amid the Music Day celebrations marking the summer solstice.
