The University of Sulaimani (Al-Sulaymaniyah) is
\ninvestigating Dr. Abdul Latif Ahmed Mustafa, known as \u201cAbdul Latif al-Salafi,\u201d
\na lecturer at the College of Islamic Sciences and a Salafi figure* in the
\nKurdistan Region, after recordings surfaced online referencing romantic
\nrelationships with female students attending his classes.<\/p>\n
The recordings circulated after a Kurdish activist based in
\nEurope reportedly leaked them, prompting the university to launch legal procedures
\nand form a higher investigative committee to review the allegations and the
\ncircumstances surrounding their release. <\/p>\n
\u201cAny proven violations would be handled under applicable
\nlaws, and the outcome of the investigation will be published once completed,\u201d
\nthe university added.<\/p>\n
The case has triggered reactions among students at the
\nCollege of Islamic Sciences, who issued a letter to public opinion, the Kurdish
\nMinistry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the university
\npresidency, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP)\u2014 the leading party in the
\nKurdistan Region\u2014 expressing concern over harassment of female students while
\nclaiming \u201cunequal treatment and discrimination within the college.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
Students also rejected the lecturer\u2019s continued involvement
\nin teaching or administrative duties, urging a boycott of classes at the start
\nof the upcoming academic year, and framed the move as necessary to ensure
\naccountability and protect the reputation of the University of Sulaimani,
\nAl-Sulaymaniyah, and the Kurdistan Region.<\/p>\n
