PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (7News) \u2014 Three adults are dead after a small aircraft crashed at a community park in Bowie, Maryland, late Saturday night. <\/p>\n

According to Maryland State Police (MSP), the preliminary investigation suggests the plane crashed in the wooded area of Archer Park around 11:30 p.m. on June 20 while flying from Ocean City, New Jersey, to Montgomery County Airpark. <\/p>\n

MSP said the victims include the pilot and two passengers. Their identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. <\/p>\n

iPhone crash alert prompted search <\/p>\n

Officials said the crash was reported to Prince George’s County Public Safety Communications through an iPhone crash alert shortly before midnight. <\/p>\n

A ground and aerial search was launched by multiple agencies, including Maryland State Police, Prince George’s County police, Anne Arundel County police, Bowie City officials and Prince George’s County Fire and EMS.<\/p>\n

The aircraft was found in a park near a residential neighborhood at around 3:45 a.m. on June 21. <\/p>\n

Officials said no one in the nearby residential area was hurt. <\/p>\n

“We are very fortunate that nobody else was injured in this crash,” Maryland State Police spokesperson Elena Russo said. “Of course, it’s an absolute tragedy that we’ve lost three individuals in this incident, but we’re also very fortunate that nobody else in the neighboring residential area was hurt.” <\/p>\n

Plane may have been tied to flight school<\/p>\n

State police said the plane is believed to belong to a local flight school out of Montgomery County and may have been on a training flight. <\/p>\n

There is no word yet on what led to the fatal crash. <\/p>\n

NTSB, FAA leading investigation<\/p>\n

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it is investigating the crash of a Piper PA-28 airplane near Bowie. The Piper Cherokee is part of the PA-28 family of aircraft. <\/p>\n

The NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are leading the investigation. <\/p>\n

The NTSB said no additional information is expected on Sunday. <\/p>\n

An NTSB investigator is expected to arrive at the crash scene later Sunday evening, with additional information possibly available on Monday.<\/p>\n

Drivers and residents in the area should expect a large emergency response while investigators remain on scene.<\/p>\n
