MIAMI \u2014 The sound of bagpipes echoed around the outskirts of the\u00a0Miami\u00a0Marlins’ ballpark hours before the first pitch, as\u00a0Scotland\u00a0fans\u00a0announced their arrival in South Florida days before their squad’s\u00a0World<\/a> Cup<\/a>\u00a0match against Brazil.<\/p>\n

Dressed in kilts and belting \u201cNo\u00a0Scotland, No Party,\u201d they marched roughly one mile from a popular\u00a0Miami\u00a0bar to loanDepot Park on Monday night, turning the stadium into the latest stop on the Tartan Army’s Major League Baseball takeover tour after they\u00a0filled the streets of Boston\u00a0and New York for Scotland’s previous matches.<\/p>\n

Inside the ballpark, the atmosphere was more lively than for most weeknight games for the Marlins, who in recent years have had some of the worst attendance in baseball. Longtime supporters were looking forward to seeing their ballpark transformed by the boisterous\u00a0Scotland\u00a0fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to give a really good experience to us\u00a0fans,\u201d said Victor Munoz, a\u00a0Miami\u00a0native. \u201cUsually the stadium\u2019s not full, now it\u2019s going to be full. It\u2019s going to be packed. It\u2019ll be fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scotland\u00a0fans\u00a0roared during a routine groundout in the first inning and chanted in anticipation of nearly every pitch. Some kicked around empty beer cans as if they were soccer balls. They took over the concourse, wearing traffic cones atop their heads while cheering.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re loving everything,\u201d said Johnnie Sloan, who flew to Boston from Glasgow,\u00a0Scotland, and drove to\u00a0Miami\u00a0for Wednesday’s match. \u201cWe’re here for the World Cup, obviously, but tonight we\u2019re here in\u00a0Miami\u00a0going to watch the baseball (game). This is a warmup for Wednesday. I guarantee the\u00a0Miami\u00a0Marlins win tonight because they\u2019ve got the full support of the Tartan Army.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Marlins\u00a0lost 4-3\u00a0to the Texas Rangers, but the Scots embraced the experience, singing afterward as if they were celebrating a victory.<\/p>\n

\u201cLively out there tonight,\u201d Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said. \u201cThat was quite the atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n

The announced crowd of 20,008 included about 8,000 members of the Tartan Army, and it was a striking sight. The ballpark was used for the World Baseball Classic, where a sellout crowd of 36,190 watched Venezuela beat the United States\u00a0in the final\u00a0earlier this year. But the Marlins entered Monday’s game averaging 12,604\u00a0fans\u00a0per game in the regular season.<\/p>\n

They’ve been one of the hottest teams in baseball, going an MLB-best 14-4 in June with an eight-game home winning streak entering Monday.<\/p>\n

Munoz hopes the Tartan Army takeover leads to more attention for the ascending\u00a0Miami\u00a0team.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to give us visibility,\u201d Munoz said. \u201cThe Marlins are a fairly new team. So it\u2019s good because that way, the world is going to get to know us. And we\u2019ll eventually get to become like a Yankee team.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Scots had\u00a0descended on bars\u00a0and filled the pubs in the Boston area as they celebrated their team\u2019s first World Cup appearance in 28 years, and a\u00a0historic victory\u00a0over Haiti in their opener.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think the ballpark is ready to supply so much beer,\u201d said Harry Guerrero, a Marlins season ticket holder who was born and raised in\u00a0Miami. \u201cI honestly think it\u2019s going to be out of hand. But I wish the ballpark well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Members of the Tartan Army met at the bar Ball & Chain to begin their march to the ballpark. Guerrero showed up to share a few drinks. He said it was the earliest he\u2019d arrived at a Marlins game in at least five years.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kind of crazy. We\u2019re so glad to have them in\u00a0Miami\u00a0and we hope they enjoy themselves,\u201d he added. \u201cI hope they\u2019re getting hydration \u2014 I told them \u2014 and their sunscreen because they\u2019re a bunch of pale guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

After singing along to a live pregame performance by Nick Morgan, who released the song \u201cNo\u00a0Scotland, No Party,\u201d\u00a0fans\u00a0turned the famed chant into \u201cNo Marlins, No Party\u201d throughout the night.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey brought their spirit over. It was really cool to see,\u201d said Owen Caissie, who had to corral a few water-filled beach balls in the outfield.<\/p>\n

Added Marlins starting pitcher Tyler Phillips: \u201cIf it was up to me, I would have us paying those people to show up to the games. That was unbelievable. Like from the second I walked out and then up the dugout, I felt it in my chest.
