\n\tA24<\/a> has unveiled the first trailer for\u00a0The Debut<\/a>, Jesse Eisenberg<\/a>\u2018s directorial follow-up to Oscar winner\u00a0A Real Pain, where he stars alongside Julianne Moore<\/a> and Paul Giamatti<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tSlated for release this fall,\u00a0The Debut\u00a0is an R-rated musical comedy centered on Mona Friedman (Moore), who when cast in a bit part at a small community theater, transforms from a shy, unassuming housewife into a zealous method actor willing to do anything to protect the artistic integrity of her marginal role \u2014 even if it means waging war against the show\u2019s domineering director (Giamatti).<\/p>\n

\n\tSeemingly akin to Whiplash for the community theater world, The Debut\u2018s trailer introduces viewers to Moore\u2019s Mona, who hasn\u2019t sung in front of anyone \u201csince church choir,\u201d yet lands a starring role in a production of Giamatti\u2019s Jerry \u2014 \u201cthe biggest name in New Jersey community theater.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLater, a character played by Halle Bailey tells Mona, \u201cJerry is going to test you, and push you, and drag you through the mud.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd this proves true, as Jerry tells her, \u201cEvery single thing you are doing is not working,\u201d while pushing Mona towards greatness.<\/p>\n

\n\tEisenberg appears to play a fellow actor in the community theater troupe.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Debut\u00a0reunites Eisenberg with Topic Studios and Fruit Tree, with whom he worked on\u00a0A Real Pain, as well as Moore, who starred opposite Finn Wolfhard in Eisenberg\u2019s Fruit Tree-produced, A24-released debut feature, When You Finish Saving the World. Eisenberg directed\u00a0from his own script, with Cara Buono, Craig Bierko, Eldar Isgandarov, and Bernadette Peters rounding out the cast. Pic\u2019s producers are Stone, Dave McCary, Ali Herting, and Eisenberg.<\/p>\n

\n\tCo-starring Kieran Culkin, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, Eisenberg\u2019s last film\u00a0A Real Pain\u00a0had the multi-hyphenate playing David, who along with mismatched cousin Benji (Culkin), embarks on a journey through Poland to pay tribute to their cherished grandmother. Solidifying Eisenberg\u2019s status as a top-tier director, the dramedy came almost two years after\u00a0When You Finish Saving the World, which A24 distributed. Searchlight snapped up worldwide rights out of Sundance, where Eisenberg won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. Eisenberg established himself as a filmmaker after building a lauded acting career, which has included an Oscar nomination for his turn as Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher\u2019s\u00a0The Social Network.<\/p>\n
