Bradwell Institute coach shares NBA memories, including time developing No. 1 pick Kwame Brown<\/p>\n

Before coaching at Bradwell Institute, Ty Randolph found himself working with a No. 1 NBA Draft pick \u2014 and sharing locker rooms with basketball royalty.<\/p>\n

As a new class of NBA hopefuls prepares to hear their names called on draft night, a coach in Southeast Georgia is reflecting on a journey that took him from the hardwood to the NBA and alongside one of the league’s most recognizable stars.<\/p>\n

Ty Randolph, who has coached at Bradwell Institute for the past six years, spent years playing professionally before moving into coaching. A South Carolina native, Randolph played collegiately at Virginia Intermont College before embarking on a career that included stops with the Harlem Globetrotters, the NBA Development League \u2014 now known as the G League \u2014 and overseas.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter college, to go and play for the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters, end up having a few stints right there in the developmental league, which is now the G League now, and also went over to Europe,\u201d Randolph told WJCL 22 Sports.<\/p>\n

After his playing career ended, Randolph turned to coaching. While working at Glynn Academy in Brunswick, he crossed paths with a player who would become part of basketball history.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was blessed to work with Kwame Brown, what we all know was the first high school player ever drafted No. 1 out of Glynn Academy in 2001,\u201d Randolph said.<\/p>\n

Brown, a Glynn Academy graduate, was selected first overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2001 NBA Draft, becoming the first prep player to be taken with the top pick.<\/p>\n

Following the draft, Brown hired Randolph as a player development coach, giving him a rare opportunity to experience the NBA firsthand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a once-in-a-lifetime situation, being able to go in and coach and be around that atmosphere on a daily basis,\u201d Randolph said.<\/p>\n

During Brown\u2019s career, Randolph had the opportunity to meet and interact with some of the game’s biggest stars, including Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Allen Iverson and Michael Jordan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI met Michael Jordan as a child, but meeting him when we were in Charlotte together, when he was in our locker room, that was probably the biggest thing,\u201d Randolph said. \u201cYou may laugh, but it\u2019s like, how do you address that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Several members of this year\u2019s draft class could soon find themselves in similar situations as they begin their NBA careers.<\/p>\n

Southeast Georgia has produced several NBA draft picks over the years, including Jordan McRae, who was selected in the second round in 2014, and Davion Mitchell, who was chosen ninth overall in 2021.<\/p>\n
