The move means more than two dozen newspapers across Arizona, Wyoming, Illinois, Nebraska and South Dakota have shuttered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>News Media Corporation CEO JJ Tompkins called the company-wide closure a \u201cdifficult decision\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn1.creativecirclemedia.com\/editorandpublisher\/files\/20250807-111603-d32-Letter-from-NMC.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in a letter to staff<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have explored every possible avenue to sustain our operations and preserve our team,\u201d said Tompkins. \u201cUnfortunately, due to financial challenges, a significant economic downturn impacting our industry, revenue losses and increasing expenses, and the recent failure of an attempt to sell the company as a going concern, we have reached a point where continuing business is no longer feasible.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bob Hembree, a reporter for the Lake Powell Chronicle, said he had no advanced notice of the closure in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/671825536700610\/posts\/1817409872142165\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Facebook post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I, along with employees and freelancers of 34 newspapers owned by News Media Corporation, found out today that it was our last day,&#8221; Hembree wrote. &#8220;All the newspapers closed without warning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hembree is also concerned for the city of Page, he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Small towns need a newspaper for many reasons,&#8221; Hembree said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\">Local journalism: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/arizona-republic\/2025\/07\/09\/reia-li-journalism-matters-gen-z\/84292885007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Many in my generation never touch newspapers. But they still rely on my reporting<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As of Aug. 8, the websites for the\u00a0Gateway to Canyon Country\u00a0and\u00a0Gateway to Copper Corridor\u00a0appeared to be offline. The other three Arizona papers remained online, though calls to their listed numbers returned a busy signal. An editor did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Tompkins, a University of Arizona <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editorandpublisher.com\/stories\/news-media-corporation-names-jj-tompkins-ceo-and-billy-mcmacken-coo,219944\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">graduate,<\/a> previously served as group publisher for NMC\u2019s Arizona newspapers before becoming the company\u2019s chief revenue officer and later its CEO.<\/p>\n<p>Tompkins told staff &#8220;we will make all reasonable efforts to pay you all remaining compensation you have earned as soon as possible, to the extent permitted by the company&#8217;s secured lenders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The closure marks the end of nearly 150 years in publishing for the Arizona Silverbelt, which billed itself as \u201cthe newspaper of record since 1878.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Across the country, newspapers and media outlets have faced financial challenges in recent years amid readership and publishing changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\">News alerts in your inbox:\u00a0Don&#8217;t miss the important news of the day.
