COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) \u2014 Mount Carmel Health Systems plans to close its doors on its standalone emergency department in Franklinton in August, forcing local residents to go elsewhere for emergency healthcare services.<\/p>\n
Mount Carmel announced several new changes in a statement Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur goal is to offer services in Franklinton that genuinely reflect community need,\u201d Mount Carmel South Region President Brian Pierson said. \u201cWe are evolving our services to grow preventative and wellness care that is flexible, easier to access, and more affordable for the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Franklinton Emergency Department was opened in 2019 after the closure of the Mount Carmel West full-service hospital.<\/p>\n
Emergency services are the most expensive when it comes to accessing care and can be financially draining for residents trying to afford out-of-pocket ER copays, according to the statement. Most patients visiting the Franklinton Emergency Department do not require emergency services, the statement said. Primary care, preventative care and coordinated wrap-around support are some of the most sought after services at the Franklinton ER location. <\/p>\n
To pivot away from emergency services, Mount Carmel will be opening a “modern, community-centered primary and preventative care hub, the Mount Carmel Franklinton Care Center.”<\/p>\n
The new care center will offer more accessible and lower-cost options to serve the neighborhood’s non-emergency health needs.<\/p>\n
The Mount Carmel Franklinton Care Center will open Aug. 24 in the Fortuity Building at 775 West Broad Street. It will offer walk-in and same-day primary care, focusing on preventative and wellness services, women\u2019s health, mental health care, as well as, coordinated social and community support with extended hours.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis transformation is about making it easier for people to get the right care at the right time at an affordable price,\u201d Pierson stated. \u201cWe are growing smarter with the community and aligning our services with what the neighborhood needs now and in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mount Carmel intends to retain all Franklinton Emergency Department staff by reassigning them to other care sites.<\/p>\n
