I enjoy telling people my favorite Beach Boys track is over 10 minutes long. They look at me like: \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s not merely the length of the three-part \u201cCalifornia Saga\u201d from the group\u2019s 1973 \u201cHolland\u201d album that\u2019s unusual among Beach Boys recordings.<\/p>\n

For one thing, neither Part 1 (\u201cBig Sur\u201d) nor Part 2 (\u201cThe Beaks of Eagles\u201d) nor Part 3 (\u201cCalifornia\u201d) was written by Brian Wilson. It was almost completely composed by Mike Love.<\/p>\n

For another, this suite, which included spoken word verses in Part 2, focused not on the sun-splashed, bikini-populated SoCal beaches of Beach Boys lore but on the state\u2019s Central Coast and did so with a reverent, environmentally conscious theme.<\/p>\n

While a little pretentious in retrospect, \u201cCalifornia Saga,\u201d which is actually three consecutive tracks on \u201cHolland\u201d tied together, still sounds great today. I think of it whenever I\u2019m in or near beautiful Big Sur. I think of it, too, when the Beach Boys come to San Diego as they seem to do everyyear.<\/p>\n

The group, with guest vocalist John Stamos, is at the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park<\/a> on Saturday, then at Pechanga Resort in Temecula<\/a> on Sunday. The concert is billed as a salute to 60 years of the group\u2019s seminal album \u201cPet Sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, Mike Love remains in the group from the \u201cHolland\u201d recording sessions in Amsterdam more than 50 years ago. The \u201cCalifornia Saga\u201d suite has not been part of the tour\u2019s set list. But \u201cCalifornia Girls\u201d has.<\/p>\n

Friday is a big day for singer-songwriter Maren Morris<\/a>, and not just because she\u2019ll be performing on the Corona Grandstand Stage at the San Diego County Fair. Friday is also the release day for a 10th-anniversary celebration of Morris\u2019 debut album \u201cHERO.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHERO: A Second Wind\u201d includes two new songs, one of which is titled \u201cHard Liquor and Soft Rock.\u201d The four demos from the original 2016 album feature another take on its \u201cDrunk Girls Don\u2019t Cry\u201d track. For traveling fans, Morris will perform the \u201cHERO\u201d album track by track on Aug. 15 at the famed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. For me, the highlight of the 2025 San Diego International Fringe Festival was a performance by San Diego-based vocalist and performance artist Yvonne Brown, better known as Fre3style13.<\/p>\n

The \u201cHip Hopera\u201d she performed at the Light Box Theater at Arts District Liberty Station, both exciting and thought-provoking, showcased her skills at singing, rapping, dance and social commentary. One of the commenters on her Facebook profile referred to Brown as a \u201cmagic maker, face melter, goose bump giver!\u201d<\/p>\n

If at first you don\u2019t succeed, why try again?<\/p>\n

Remember the \u201cSupergirl\u201d flick from 1984, the one with Helen Slater in the title role and a supporting cast that included (get this) Faye Dunaway, Mia Farrow and Peter O\u2019Toole? It did not soar at the box office.<\/p>\n

Yet more than 40 years later we have another \u201cSupergirl\u201d movie, this one starring Milly Alcock (\u201cHouse of the Dragon\u201d). It opens in cinemas nationwide on Friday.<\/p>\n

Who knows if the new \u201cSupergirl\u201d will be better received than its predecessor, but it does boast a companion for Kara Zor-El missing from the\u201984 film: Krypto the Superdog. No surprise, Krypto is 3D-modeled.<\/p>\n

Visual art<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Worlds We Grow\u201d<\/a> is the theme of this year\u2019s Mass Creativity Day event at the New Children\u2019s Museum downtown.<\/p>\n

It happens on Saturday, is free and is, as they say, something for the entire family.<\/p>\n

Besides art-making on site the day will feature workshops led by the museum\u2019s community partners, the Barrio Logan College Institute, Skyline Hills Public Library and the City Heights\/Weingart Public Library.<\/p>\n

This is the 14 th such Mass Creativity Day the museum has hosted. Here\u2019s to their hosting at least 14 more.
