\n\tA series adaptation of the 2006 film \u201cAquamarine<\/a>\u201d has received a pilot order at Disney+<\/a> and Disney Channel, Variety has learned. <\/p>\n

\n\tEmma Roberts<\/a>, who starred in the original film, will guest star as Claire Brown in the pilot, with Roberts also onboard as an executive producer. The project hails from writer Sarah Watson, with the film\u2019s director, Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, attached to direct and executive produce. Susan Cartsonis, who produced the film, will also executive produce. John Quaintance and Jessica Bendinger wrote the original film, which was based on a novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman. Quintance, Bendinger, and Hoffman are not involved in the pilot.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe logline for the pilot states, \u201cWhen teenaged Coral moves to a dreamy seaside town, she begins unraveling the truth behind her mother\u2019s disappearance\u2014and discovers her mother was a mermaid, awakening magical powers in Coral just as secrets beneath the waves threaten to surface.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tAlong with Roberts, \u201cAquamarine\u201d starred Joanna \u201cJoJo\u201d Levesque, Sara Paxton, Jake McDorman, and Arielle Kebbel. In the film, best friends Claire (Roberts) and Hailey (Levesque) try to help mermaid Aquamarine (Paxton) find true love. The film was not particularly well-received when it was first released, but has since achieved cult status. <\/p>\n

\n\tSince starring in \u201cAquamarine,\u201d Roberts has gone on to star in films like \u201cWe\u2019re the Millers,\u201d \u201cPalo Alto,\u201d and \u201cThe Art of Getting By.\u201d In television, she is known for her frequent collaborations with Ryan Murphy, which includes starring in multiple seasons of \u201cAmerican Horror Story\u201d as well as the Fox show \u201cScream Queens.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tWatson previously created the popular Freeform series \u201cThe Bold Type,\u201d which aired for five seasons. She most recently wrote multiple episodes of the Disney+ series \u201cPercy Jackson and the Olympians\u201d and created the CBS medical drama \u201cPure Genius.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to directing \u201cAquamarine,\u201d Rosenbaum has directed episodes of shows like \u201cGossip Girl,\u201d \u201cThe Vampire Diaries,\u201d \u201cAll American,\u201d \u201cEmpire,\u201d \u201cGinny & Georgia,\u201d and \u201cDead to Me.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tWatson is repped by Verve and Range Media Partners. Rosenbaum is repped by WME and McKuin Frankel Whitehead. Roberts is repped by UTA, Sweeney Entertainment, Felker Toczek, and Shelter PR.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis is the latest example of Disney attempting to reboot one of their film properties as a TV series.
