{"id":727016,"date":"2026-06-26T10:22:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T10:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/727016\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T10:22:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T10:22:13","slug":"michigan-basketball-retains-national-champ-final-four-mop-elliot-cadeau-after-dusty-may-leaves-for-nba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/727016\/","title":{"rendered":"Michigan basketball retains national champ, Final Four MOP Elliot Cadeau after Dusty May leaves for NBA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">ANN ARBOR, Mich. \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/Wolverines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Michigan Wolverines<\/a> point guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/Elliot_Cadeau\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Elliot Cadeau<\/a> will remain with the program despite the departure of national championship-winning coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/Dusty_May\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dusty May<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Cadeau announced his decision on his Instagram account on Thursday (June 25).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Cadeau\u2019s decision provides stability for Michigan as the program begins a coaching transition after May left this week to become head coach of the NBA\u2019s Dallas Mavericks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The 6\u20191\u201d guard started all 40 games during Michigan\u2019s national championship season, averaging 10.5 points and 5.9 assists after transferring from North Carolina. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Cadeau was named the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player after recording 13 points and 10 assists in the national semifinal against Arizona before scoring 19 points in the Wolverines\u2019 championship victory over UConn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">He becomes the second key Michigan player to publicly commit to returning, joining guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/Trey_McKenney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trey McKenney<\/a>, who announced earlier this week that he plans to remain with the program. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">McKenney averaged 9.9 points as a freshman while emerging as one of the nation\u2019s top reserves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/University_of_Michigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">University of Michigan<\/a> Athletic Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/Warde_Manuel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Warde Manuel<\/a> named assistant coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/Mike_Boynton_Jr.\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mike Boynton Jr.<\/a> interim head coach on Tuesday following May\u2019s departure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Boynton Jr. said he learned of May\u2019s decision Monday morning and acknowledged the unexpected nature of the coaching change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cI found out Monday morning like everybody else,\u201d Boynton Jr. said during an interview with the Big Ten Network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Despite the surprise, Boynton Jr. praised May and said the opportunity to coach in the NBA was deserved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cFirst of all, what a tremendous opportunity,\u201d Boynton Jr. said. \u201cDusty\u2019s one of the elite basketball coaches in the world. He\u2019s obviously done great work here at Michigan with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">May compiled a 64-13 record in two seasons at Michigan, leading the Wolverines to the national championship, a Big Ten regular-season title, and the conference tournament championship. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">He inherited a program coming off an 8-24 season under Fab Five legend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/Juwan_Howard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Juwan Howard<\/a> before engineering one of the nation\u2019s quickest turnarounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In a statement released Tuesday, May thanked Michigan fans and called the decision to leave a difficult one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWhen my family and I came to Ann Arbor two years ago, we hoped we could help bring Michigan basketball back to where it belongs,\u201d May said. \u201cI never could have imagined how special these last two seasons would be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">May added that the opportunity with the Mavericks \u201cwas right for my family and something I felt I needed to pursue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Manuel thanked May for restoring the program while expressing disappointment over his departure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWhile we are disappointed to see Dusty leave Michigan, we are deeply grateful to the May family for the lasting impact they have made on our program and our university,\u201d Manuel said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">According to reports, because Michigan appointed an interim coach rather than a permanent replacement, the NCAA\u2019s 15-day transfer portal window tied to a coaching change will not immediately open for Wolverines players.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Boynton Jr. said his immediate priority is maintaining continuity for a roster capable of competing for another championship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWhat we did this year is obviously the ultimate of what can be accomplished at the University of Michigan,\u201d Boynton said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got really good players, really good resources, a great fan base, and I\u2019m excited to serve our players and our program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Michigan\u2019s roster includes a highly regarded incoming recruiting class led by five-star freshman<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/Wolverines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brandon McCoy Jr.<\/a>, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/Wolverines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">J.P. Estrella<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/Wolverines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Moustapha Thiam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Boynton Jr. expressed confidence that the relationships built by the coaching staff will help keep the roster intact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWe feel good about the relationships that our staff has with the players on the team,\u201d Boynton said. \u201cThese guys all committed to come to Michigan to play together, and the team that we put together, we feel like can compete nationally and certainly at the higher end of the Big Ten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">He also said Michigan\u2019s style of play will remain largely unchanged during the transition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWe\u2019ll continue to play the system that we\u2019ve played the last couple of years with Dusty,\u201d Boynton said. \u201cWe\u2019ll play a lot through our ones and fives.
