{"id":72803,"date":"2025-08-10T17:30:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-10T17:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/72803\/"},"modified":"2025-08-10T17:30:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-10T17:30:06","slug":"move-over-prairie-grizzlies-here-come-the-prairie-mountain-lions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/72803\/","title":{"rendered":"Move Over, Prairie Grizzlies, Here Come The Prairie Mountain Lions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Mountain lions have been expanding their range into the Great Plains states for more than 20 years, but that migration seems to be picking up steam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Increasing numbers of mountain lion sightings in Kansas and verified reports of kittens born in Oklahoma show that the big cats\u2019 range isn\u2019t limited by their name.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Nebraska has a well-established mountain lion population with hunting seasons for the big cats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Even so, don\u2019t expect to see bunches of mountain lions wandering together on America\u2019s open prairies like prides of lions on the Serengeti in Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Regardless of habitat, mountain lions are still mostly solitary and like to ambush their prey from hiding spots.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">In the Great Plains states, they\u2019re settling in places such as rugged, forested bluffs or river breaks with steep ravines and thick cover.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cMountain lions are extremely adaptive and prairie habitat is usually more what we would consider dispersal habitat. They&#8217;re usually associated with some sort of topography that assists them with their stalk-and-ambush predation strategy,\u201d Wyoming Game and Fish Large Carnivore Specialist Dan Thompson told Cowboy State Daily.<\/p>\n<p>Great Plains Getting Wilder\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The mountain lions\u2019 push into the prairie states is part of a larger movement of species that were driven back into the mountains as the West was settled. Now they are steadily reclaiming prairie areas across the Great Plains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">That includes grizzlies in Montana pushing as far east as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2023\/11\/15\/montana-prairie-grizzlies-still-on-the-move-now-in-missouri-breaks\/\" title=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2023\/11\/15\/montana-prairie-grizzlies-still-on-the-move-now-in-missouri-breaks\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Missouri Breaks<\/a>\u00a0and elk with Wyoming DNA reestablishing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2023\/09\/14\/nebraska-elk-with-wyoming-dna-causing-problems-in-croplands\/\" title=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2023\/09\/14\/nebraska-elk-with-wyoming-dna-causing-problems-in-croplands\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">herds in Nebraska<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">At one time, there were mountain lions \u2014 also called cougars, panthers or catamounts \u2014 all over the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cMountain lions used to roam across the entire Lower 48, although we don&#8217;t have an idea as to what relative densities were in some of those prairie habitats,\u201d Thompson said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska Has Three Main Populations<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">In Nebraska, mountain lions are plentiful in three places, said Kent Fricke, assistant division administrator with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Those include the Pine Ridge region in the northern panhandle, the Wildcat Hills in the southern panhandle, and along the Niobrara River, which runs across the northern part of the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The first two areas are \u201cponderosa pine-dominated, with rugged buttes and bluffs, not what people typically think of when they think of Nebraska,\u201d he told Cowboy State Daily.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The Niobrara River\u00a0country is \u201cmore typical, using air quotes here, \u2018prairie habitat,\u2019\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Even so, mountain lions rarely stray more than a mile from riparian river zones and out into the prairie grasslands, Fricke added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">There\u2019s evidence that mountain lions have been pushing eastward along the river, though it\u2019s not known whether they\u2019ve gotten as far as the confluence of the Niobrara and Missouri rivers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">It\u2019s \u201ctypically young males\u201d that wander the farthest, Fricke said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Though Nebraska shares a long state line with Kansas, it\u2019s not likely that many of the mountain lions popping up in Kansas came from Nebraska, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Most of the country along the Nebraska-Kansas state line doesn\u2019t have the river bottoms that mountain lions prefer to move through, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Instead, it\u2019s more likely that the Kansas mountain lions came from Colorado.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dinnertime On The Great Plains<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Nebraska has plenty of prey animals for mountain lions to feast on, Fricke said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">In western Nebraska, there are the aforementioned elk, as well as mule deer, white-tailed deer and even some bighorn sheep, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Farther to the east, the menu changes to white-tailed deer and an array of smaller animals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Mountain lions are adaptable eaters, Thompson said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cTheir primary prey would likely be deer, but we also documented a higher prevalence of smaller prey items in agricultural habitats of the Dakotas \u2014 badgers, beavers, porcupines, etc,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are very adaptable and adept as a species.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Big Cats Will Keep Moving<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Mountain lions have been pushing out in all directions for years, Thompson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cWe&#8217;ve documented mountain lions dispersing into the Midwest since at least the early 2000s,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cNebraska was likely recolonized from the Black Hills and the Laramie Range more recently, based on genetic analyses. We have documented them dispersing west into Wyoming from Nebraska and vice versa,\u201d Thompson added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Once mountain lions get moving, they really like to rack up the miles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cThey have the ability to move great distances while dispersing, especially into these recolonization areas,\u201d he said. \u201cWe documented dispersal from the Black Hills to Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Canada.
