Big Chalk Analytics released its Spring 2026 GLP-1 and CPG Industry Update, showing that the introduction of GLP-1 medications in pill form could expand the active U.S. GLP-1 user population by as much as 50% by 2027, significantly increasing pressure on grocery demand and food-at-home sales.GLP-1 adoption continues to rise nationwide, reaching 13.1% of U.S. adults in June 2026, up from 12% in November 2025. Those gains have come largely before oral GLP-1 medications have achieved widespread availability. Even without broad access to the pill form, Big Chalk forecasts GLP-1-related consumption changes will reduce food-at-home sales by between 1.1% and 2.7% in 2026\u2014equivalent to at least $9 billion and potentially more than $21 billion in annual grocery spending.<\/p>\n
The introduction of oral GLP-1 medications could significantly expand the category\u2019s reach. Forty-four percent of former GLP-1 users say the availability of a pill makes them more likely to resume treatment, while 25.1% of prospective users cite pill format as a key factor in their decision. If those intentions translate into behavior, GLP-1 penetration could climb to approximately 20% of the U.S. adult population within two years.The findings arrive as grocery prices continue to rise, increasing approximately 3% over the past 12 months and extending a multi-year inflationary cycle that began in 2021.”For the last several years, every conversation about grocery sales has started with inflation.
