The Buffalo Sabres have selected forward Ilia Morozov with the 20th pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.<\/p>\n
Morozov began last season as the youngest player in the NCAA and still managed to impress as a freshman at the Miami University (Ohio), posting 20 points (8+12) in 36 games.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s the report from NHL Central Scouting Services, which listed Morozov as the 10th-ranked North American-based skater in the draft:<\/p>\n
A highly intelligent two-way forward who brings pace and precision to his game. He shows excellent awareness off the puck, supporting plays responsibly while positioning himself to create scoring opportunities in transition. His combination of strong edges, quick hands and a deceptive release makes him a consistent offensive threat, particularly on entries and in tight spaces. His compete level, versatility, and ability to elevate the play of those around him project well for success at the pro level.<\/p>\n
TSN\u2019s Craig Button concurred with the two-way description of Morozov, comparing him to Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe plays [the game] with a real edge, he plays it with his head,\u201d Button told Sabres Live. \u201cWhen you watch somebody who can get himself invested and be successful in so many different areas of the game, like a Jordan Staal, it won\u2019t always show up in terms of the stat sheet individually, but where it does show up is your team having a chance to have success and to be able to impose yourself. Big, strong centers like Ilia Morozov don\u2019t come along very [often].\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Morozov is a native of Moscow, Russia but moved to the United States at age 14 to pursue his dream of playing in the NHL. He played for the USHL\u2019s Tri-City Storm prior to beginning his collegiate career at Miami.<\/p>\n
