Now, McGee is talking about what happened and his life since.<\/p>\n
At the time, The Athletic\u2019s reporting didn\u2019t indicate the nature of the complaint<\/a> that had been made against McGee; it was included in a report<\/a> regarding former senior vice president of production Lee Fitting\u2019s exit from ESPN. The revelation about McGee\u2019s departure came amid a series of examples in the report that depict ESPN\u2019s shifting approach to dealing with such behavior and accusations. McGee had told The Athletic that he had been advised not to comment on the matter.<\/p>\n Last weekend, the former\u00a0SportsCenter\u00a0anchor posted a video on Instagram (as noted by Front Office Sports<\/a>) acknowledging he lost his job following a workplace investigation.<\/p>\n \u201cAt the end of that process, I was terminated,\u201d McGee said in the video. \u201cPeople have asked me ever since what happened. The honest answer is that I can only tell you what I know. I was never provided the specific details of the complaint that ultimately led to that decision. I asked questions, I looked for answers, and I left that process with more uncertainty than clarity.\u201d<\/p>\n A former sports anchor at\u00a0the Baltimore CBS affiliate WJZ-TV, McGee joined<\/a>\u00a0ESPN in January 2022<\/a>. The Temple alum\u2019s hiring received plenty of fanfare due to his unique journey as a college dropout<\/a> who had worked his way to the Worldwide Leader in Sports. However, he disappeared from the network\u2019s airwaves in early 2024 without fanfare or explanation until The Athletic\u2019s report.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cFor the last two years, I\u2019ve mostly stayed quiet. Not because I didn\u2019t have anything to say, but because I was trying to do what I thought was the right thing,\u201d McGee continued. \u201cWhat made it difficult was this wasn\u2019t just a job\u2014this was something I worked years toward.<\/p>\n \u201cNow suddenly it was gone. Now I\u2019m not making this video to attack anyone [or] blame anyone, and I\u2019m not asking for sympathy. I\u2019m making it because the silence has allowed other people to tell the story for me.\u201d<\/p>\n McGee added that the \u201cuncertainty\u201d of not knowing the reasons behind the HR investigation decision has \u201cbeen one of the hardest parts of the last two years.\u201d Following his dismissal, he said he was unable to land other TV jobs and had to drive for Uber and move back home while trying to find another position in the industry.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve questioned myself. I\u2019ve been angry, I\u2019ve been embarrassed, I\u2019ve been disappointed, and I\u2019ve wondered whether I\u2019d ever work in television again,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I\u2019ve also learned something: You don\u2019t always get closure. You don\u2019t always get a perfect explanation.
