Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. invested in the project in a move to bolster Japan\u2019s carbon capture ecosystem and support the development of the Japan\u2013Canada carbon removal corridor.Todd Korol\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Canadian companies have struck more than $1.7-billion in commercial deals in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/japan\/\">Japan<\/a> as a part of the Team Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/trade-and-commerce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/trade-and-commerce\/\">trade<\/a> mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Maninder Sidhu, federal Minister of International Trade, witnessed the signing of 14 agreements on Thursday, marking what he said was a record amount of money secured during a Canadian trade mission. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The trade mission was the largest to the Indo-Pacific region since the government launched its trade diversification strategy in the continent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThis is trade diversification in action: Canadian businesses signing real agreements, opening new markets, and deepening our partnership with Japan, one of our most important partners in the Indo-Pacific,\u201d Mr. Sidhu said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The three-day mission followed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2026\/03\/06\/prime-minister-carney-forges-new-comprehensive-strategic-partnership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2026\/03\/06\/prime-minister-carney-forges-new-comprehensive-strategic-partnership\">partnership<\/a> announced by Canada and Japan during Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s visit to Tokyo in March that is aimed at bolstering the nations\u2019 defence, energy, trade and technology sectors through cross-country collaboration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The trade visit comes on the heels of a new Canada-Japan Equipment and Technology Transfer Agreement, which came into force last week and establishes a framework to facilitate the transfer of defence equipment and technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-canada-seeking-closer-defence-ties-with-japan-as-it-grows-presence-in\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ottawa seeking closer defence ties with Japan as it grows presence in Indo-Pacific<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The moves are part of broader efforts by Ottawa to diversify and strengthen trade and security co-operation with overseas allies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The mission, led by Mr. Sidhu, brought more than 300 delegates from 175 Canadian organizations to deepen existing relationships and pursue new partnerships. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Tokyo-headquartered Mitsubishi Electric Corp. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/markets\/stocks\/MIELF\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/markets\/stocks\/MIELF\/\">MIELF<\/a> selected Canadian technology company MDA Space Ltd. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/markets\/stocks\/MDA-T\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/markets\/stocks\/MDA-T\/\">MDA-T<\/a> to support defence satellite communications for Japan\u2019s Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">MDA Space will manufacture and test advanced antenna solutions in Montreal, while the company\u2019s operations in Britain will support the core technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/markets\/stocks\/SMFG-N\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/markets\/stocks\/SMFG-N\/\">SMFG-N<\/a> invested in Canadian climate tech company Deep Sky in a move to bolster Japan\u2019s carbon capture ecosystem and support the development of the Japan\u2013Canada carbon removal corridor. The deal strengthens a partnership established in December, when the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Montreal-based Deep Sky was founded in 2022 and specializes in direct air capture carbon removal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-td-signs-10-year-deal-with-carbon-capture-startup-deep-sky\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TD signs 10-year deal with carbon capture startup Deep Sky<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cInvestments like this help strengthen commercial ties between Canada and Japan while supporting the growth of innovative climate solutions developed in Canada and deployed globally,\u201d Mr. Sidhu said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Megan Shay, Deep Sky\u2019s vice-president of communications, told The Globe and Mail said it was a \u201csignificant\u201d deal and the \u201cfirst of its kind for the bank\u201d but did not disclose the terms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">An industry source said the investment is an \u201ceight-figure\u201d amount, or more than $10-million. The Globe is not identifying the source because they were not authorized to speak on the matter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">BlackBerry Ltd. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/markets\/stocks\/BB-T\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/markets\/stocks\/BB-T\/\">BB-T<\/a> signed a deal with Japanese advanced car parts supplier Astemo to provide software for next-generation vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">BlackBerry\u2019s QNX software powers digital dashboards, advanced driver assistance systems and hands-free infotainment for brands like BMW, Ford and Toyota. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">BlackBerry reported Thursday that QNX revenue increased by 26 per cent in the first quarter and the unit is expected to continue delivering growth while being the company\u2019s focus. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-blackberry-results-earnings-results-forecast-first-quarter-may-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meme stock no more: BlackBerry sheds dubious label as shares soar on rosy results and outlook<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Montreal-based satellite designer and builder RSAT Space and Warpspace \u2013 a Japanese space-tech startup that develops intersatellite communication tools \u2013 put up US$5-million for a partnership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Gurvinder Chohan, chief executive of RSAT, said in an interview that the companies have been working together for a few years and would be incorporating Warpspace\u2019s laser communication technology into their satellites that are made in Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Chohan said that together they\u2019ll be selling the data to various government and non-government offices, which are expected to bring in between US$5-million and US$6-million a year in revenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">ZeroKey, a quantum tech company based in Calgary, signed a memorandum of understanding with Deloitte Japan to introduce factory automation and digital transformation in Japan\u2019s manufacturing sector using ZeroKey\u2019s Canadian-developed real-time location technology.
