The United States and Iran have traded strikes for the first time since signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) last week, raising tensions days before the two sides are set to meet for the next round of talks.<\/p>\n
The US military said it carried out the strikes in retaliation for a drone attack on a cargo ship a day earlier in the Strait of Hormuz. This came after US President Donald Trump accused Iran of carrying out that attack.<\/p>\n
Iranian state media reported that a projectile struck near a pier in the city of Sirik near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said Qeshm island has also been hit.<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted locations in the region where US forces are deployed in retaliation for the Trump administration\u2019s latest attack.<\/p>\n

In Iran
\nIran\u2019s Foreign Ministry has condemned the US strikes. \u201cThese brutal attacks, the ministry said, \u201cconstitute a blatant violation\u201d of the UN Charter, as well as a \u201cclear breach of Paragraph 1 of the Memorandum of Understanding\u201d.
\nIran\u2019s IRGC Navy, in a statement, said it responded to the US strikes on Friday by targeting US military sites in the region. \u201cIn response to this act of aggression, the Navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted the deployment sites of the US military in the region,\u201d the statement said. There were no reports of US targets being attacked by the time of publication.
\nIran\u2019s IRGC accuses the US of violating commitments under the MoU in its latest attacks, adding that the deal gives Tehran control over ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz \u2013 a global energy chokepoint.
\nAn Iranian MP says US strikes on Iran during the talks exposed Washington\u2019s lack of commitment to diplomacy and ceasefire understandings. Ebrahim Azizi, the head of parliament\u2019s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said on X that the US \u201conce again attacked Iran in the middle of negotiations\u201d.
\nIran\u2019s Mehr news agency quoted the head of ports at eastern Hormozgan as saying that no damage has been caused to the port of Sirik in Hormozgan province following the US attacks.

\nAfter US-brokered talks, Israel and Lebanon have signed a \u201cframework agreement\u201d that Washington says aims to end the \u201ccycle of endless conflict\u201d.
\nLebanese group Hezbollah has rejected the deal, with one politician saying it will only \u201cserve the interests\u201d of Israel.
\nAmid protests in Beirut, Al Jazeera\u2019s Zeina Khodr explains that those who are against the Israel-Lebanon framework agreement have said it will not end Israel\u2019s occupation of southern Lebanon. \u201cThe word withdrawal is not in [the] text,\u201d she noted in a post on X. \u201cInstead, the framework stipulates that Israeli forces will \u2018redeploy out of the Lebanese territory\u2019 once non-state actors \u2013 such as Hezbollah \u2013 are disarmed.\u201d

\nThe Strait of Hormuz
\nPresident Trump on Friday described the attack on a commercial ship near the Strait of Hormuz as a \u201cfoolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement\u201d.
\nIranian official Ebrahim Azizi responded to Trump\u2019s social media post, saying Iran governs the strait and that ships should \u201crespect the rules\u201d and \u201cuse secure routes\u201d.
\nSpokesperson Stephane Dujarric has said that the UN hopes to see a \u201csustained\u201d opening of the Strait of Hormuz. \u201cI think it\u2019s important that everybody live up to what they\u2019ve committed to in every agreement that is signed,\u201d Dujarric told reporters in New York.
\nAl Jazeera\u2019s Resul Serdar Atas, reporting from Tehran, said there were discussions about a line of communication between the United States and Iran to somehow tackle the tensions in the strait. \u201cBut the IRGC today has said that there is no such communication line; it is not established, and will not be,\u201d he said.
\nAl Jazeera\u2019s Atas said Tehran sees the Strait of Hormuz as its \u201cbiggest leverage\u201d in negotiations with the US. \u201cFor the Iranians, it\u2019s a strategic decision to assert control and sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
