And 250 years of nationhood is definitely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/26\/travel\/unique-ways-to-celebrate-america-250\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">something to celebrate<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtmvkc10007356rvk5qlr4w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet the history of the land \u2014 and the people who have resided on the vast expanse that became the United States \u2014 stretches back much further.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsfr80p000a356rgkvzmldo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It includes colonial times and the pre-Columbian era with its mosaic of Native American cultures, plus the long-ago days when giant reptiles roamed the Earth and the first humans made their way onto the North American continent across the Bering Land Bridge.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsfraug000c356rdikgjkee@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of those reptiles was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldmuseum.org\/blog\/sue-t-rex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cSue\u201d the Tyrannosaurus<\/a> \u2014 one of the world\u2019s largest, best preserved Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons. Dating back some 67 million years, Sue is now a permanent resident of Chicago\u2019s Field Museum of Natural History.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqv9utei00053b6rophw2jak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And in southern New Mexico, fossilized footprints in a remote corner of White Sands National Park attest to human movement long before the colonists. Embedded in hardened gypsum soil, the footprints were surrounded by ancient grass seeds radiocarbon dated to between 21,130 and 22,860 years ago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsftw7f000e356rpwfgkcvi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both discoveries are part of the rich history behind the place now known as America.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqv9vaug00073b6rwf6fra6n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here are 13 more spots to explore that predate the founding of the nation:\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/e78b2250-b6bf-4d59-a552-4cd21a56e23aoriginal.jpg\" alt=\"The Effigy Mounds served spiritual and burial functions for Native American tribes, according to archaeologists.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsfubdo000k356rsihideo1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Beginning more than 2,500 years ago, Native peoples in what is now Iowa constructed elaborate earthen mounds along the Mississippi River. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/efmo\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Effigy Mounds<\/a> are associated with about 20 Native American tribes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsfuzbn000m356r1y4hkmw6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Archaeologists have determined the mounds served ceremonial, spiritual and burial functions, though many details of their cultural significance remain a mystery. According to the National Park Service, which maintains the site where the mounds lay, the formations are believed by archaeologists to indicate preferred areas for hunting and other activities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsfuzbo000n356r2hfdk82w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The majority are shaped like the animals \u2014 turtles, panthers, bear, birds and other creatures \u2014 that inhabited the region.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsfwds7000t356racijg7aq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ancient people living in present-day Ohio were also into mound building. Located around 45 miles (72 km) south of Columbus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/hocu\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hopewell Culture National Historical Park<\/a> preserves dozens of large burial and ceremonial mounds in a region later settled by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohiorc.org\/shawnee-tribes-ohio-legacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Shawnee people<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsg0t9i000v356riiwgug9n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Declared a World Heritage Site in 2023, the mounds are scattered across five different sites around Chillicothe, Ohio. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1689\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">UNESCO<\/a>, some of the massive earthen squares, circles and octagons are executed with great precision and in alignment with sun and moon cycles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsg0t9i000w356rgrpzfyt5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ritual objects discovered at the sites show that the Hopewell people traded with many other bygone societies between the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/gettyimages-1084533800.jpg\" alt=\"The Spanish discovered Taos in the 1540s. At that point, the settlement in New Mexico had been under development for 500 years.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1669\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsg1rnf0013356r56icvk7w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the nation\u2019s oldest continuously occupied sites, the iconic <a href=\"https:\/\/taospueblo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Taos Pueblo<\/a> in northern New Mexico looks much the same today as when the Spanish explorers first arrived in the 1540s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsg5x700015356rpgqw6joy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The two multi-story historic structures \u2014 known as Hlauuma (North House) and Hlaukwima (South House) in the Indigenous Tiwa language family \u2014 are still occupied by around 75 of the village\u2019s 1,400 residents. Taos Pueblo hosts numerous special events, including a powwow and multi-tribal cultural festival on the second weekend of July.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsg5zgb0017356ria2iy52u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Visitors can tour the traditional Adobe homes and guided tours are offered year-round.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsg6apl001d356rboxmmfn9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rising above the Illinois prairie on the opposite side of the Mississippi River from St. Louis, <a href=\"https:\/\/cahokiamounds.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cahokia<\/a> was once a thriving urban area and trade center with a population that may have rivaled many of the largest cities of Europe at its peak around 1250.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsgmk4b001h356rfrf959os@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now an Illinois state park, the site includes an excellent archaeological museum, the reconstruction of an ancient astronomical observatory called Woodhenge and scores of earthen mounds. With a footprint equivalent to the largest pyramids of ancient Egypt, Cahokia\u2019s colossal Monks Mound is the largest pre-Columbian structure north of central Mexico.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/gettyimages-1497178293.jpg\" alt=\"The Jamestown settlement marked its 400th anniversary in 2007. The colonists there initially struggled but Jamestown became a strong foundation for the Virginia colony.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsgnxsz001o356reklhgif5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It may not have a famous rock to mark the spot, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jyfmuseums.org\/visit\/jamestown-settlement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jamestown<\/a> was the first permanent English settlement in what would later become the United States \u2014 13 years before the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsgp5sx001q356rq1eet4cd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Like their British brethren in Plymouth and the earlier lost colony on Roanoke Island in North Carolina, the original inhabitants of Jamestown struggled to survive at first. They endured a \u201cStarving Time\u201d of disease, failed crops and conflict with the Powhatan Native American tribe to become the seed from which the Virginia colony sprouted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsgp5sx001r356rwutob0gg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jamestown also begat the legend of Captain John Smith and Pocahontas. And that\u2019s just what it was \u2014 a legend rather than historical fact. A daughter of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/jame\/learn\/historyculture\/pocahontas-her-life-and-legend.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Powhatan chieftain<\/a>, Pocohontas was never in love with Smith and married a different Englishman (John Rolfe).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsgqaa2001v356rbyw90x11@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For an institution that has educated so many American presidents, Nobel laureates and Declaration of Independence signers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/about\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Harvard University<\/a> had a rather humble beginning.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsgqyec001x356rqfjz0hd5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Allotting a grand total of 400 British pounds for the task, the Great and General Court of the Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England declared that \u201ca schoale or colledge\u201d should be created for higher education.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsgqyec001y356rk08cfrti@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Harvard\u2019s first home was a modest house on an acre of land overlooking what was called \u201cCow-yard Row\u201d \u2014 a rural area on the outskirts of Boston. The first graduating class in 1642 boasted just nine men. And Cow-yard Row eventually evolved into modern-day Harvard Yard.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/gettyimages-1194948076.jpg\" alt=\"Hawaiian-style wood carvings at the Pu\u02bbuhonua O H\u014dnaunau National Historical Park in Hawaii, which memorializes a temple complex that goes back nearly 400 years.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsgrk5l0024356r5v6py9xy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Located along the Kona Coast on the Island of Hawaii, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/puho\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">seaside temple complex<\/a> served as a place of refuge for civilians during times of war.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsh7xz30028356rpdjrchw3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It also housed defeated warriors seeking to avoid execution by the victors and anyone who broke the kapu, which means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/locations\/hawaii\/social-structure.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cforbidden\u201d<\/a> in Hawaiian, and refers to a set of sacred laws or taboos that endured until 1819.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsh7thi0026356rn6x0b687@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today\u2019s national historical park features a reconstruction of the Hale o Keawe temple surrounded by a wooden stockade, volcano stone wall and carved wooden ki\u02bbi figures of Hawaiian gods. It\u2019s still an active place of worship.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqsh900m002c356rfcrs4e4y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Erected by the Dutch colonial government, the original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/history-of-nyse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wall Street<\/a> was literally the path along the inside of a timber and earthen wall to protect New Amsterdam from potential attacks by rival colonial powers and other perceived threats.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqshasq5002e356r3cuzq3z4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s believed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.nyc\/blog\/2017\/2\/9\/the-dutch-the-english-part-1-good-fences-a-history-of-wall-street\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">slave labor<\/a> carried out the construction of \u201cWaal Straat.\u201d What is known for sure is that shortly after the wall\u2019s demolition, the intersection of Wall Street and Pearl Street served as New York City\u2019s slave market from 1711 to 1762.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqshasq6002f356r8zlyioqm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/feha\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Federal Hall<\/a>, completed in 1703, later served as New York\u2019s city hall and the first US Capitol building after the Revolutionary War (1785 to 1788). Around that same time, securities traders began meeting under a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sechistorical.org\/museum\/galleries\/sro\/sro02b.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">buttonwood tree<\/a> on Wall Street, the al fresco origin of the city\u2019s stock exchange.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        White Horse Tavern, Rhode Island (1673)<\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/gettyimages-2241501044.jpg\" alt=\"The White Horse Tavern in Newport, Rhode Island, began operating as a restaurant in 1673, a century before the colonists decided to revolt against English rule.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqshc5ge002p356rdysfc33j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It may resemble a big red barn, but this culinary landmark in Newport, Rhode Island, is considered one of the nation\u2019s oldest operating restaurants and one of the 10 oldest eating establishments on the entire planet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqshjatx002r356r4crx8myn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although the structure dates from 1652, it didn\u2019t become a food and beverage outlet for another two decades. Once it was licensed to sell \u201call sorts of strong drink,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/whitehorsenewport.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">White Horse Tavern<\/a> became the meeting place of the colonial assembly, city council and criminal court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqshjatx002s356rhwe5dr1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            New England clam chowder, beef Wellington, Scotch egg and bread pudding are some of the vintage dishes on the current menu at the White Horse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqshkc5x002w356rdvyj07my@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the nation\u2019s oldest hotels played a role in the American Revolution, <a href=\"https:\/\/concordscolonialinn.com\/about\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Colonial Inn in Concord, Massachusetts<\/a>, first as a meeting place for rebellious colonists and then a target of the ill-fated Redcoat march from Boston.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqshm1o6002y356ro6av16xf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Learning that Patriot forces had stored arms and provisions at the inn and other nearby structures, the British Army marched on Concord in April 1775. The two forces clashed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/mima\/north-bridge-questions.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">North Bridge<\/a> over the Concord River near the inn. Today, the convent is a museum with exhibits on local history that\u2019s sometimes used for wedding banquets and special events.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqshom24003e356rr87ujjbm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Located in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citystaug.com\/693\/Our-History\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">St. Augustine<\/a>, which is considered the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the US, the <a href=\"https:\/\/staughs.com\/oldest-house-museum-complex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gonz\u00e1lez\u2013\u00c1lvarez House<\/a> is Florida\u2019s oldest surviving Spanish colonial residence. It was built by a soldier stationed at nearby Castillo de San Marcos who needed a place for his family to live. The upper story is covered in wooden clapboards while the ground floor features coquina limestone masonry walls and seashell tabby flooring.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqshqeg6003g356rx0fea8qx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Gonz\u00e1lez\u2013\u00c1lvarez is part of the Oldest House Museum Complex that also includes the Tovar House (built in the 1760s), a shady garden, a small history museum and a collection dedicated to local surfing history and culture.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqshqeg6003h356rk3it0llv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The complex, operated by the St. Augustine Historical Society, is open to the public, houses a research library and hosts weddings.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/gettyimages-107350326.jpg\" alt=\"Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala was California's first mission.
