You have gnome idea. <\/p>\n<p>Move over psilocybin \u2014 there\u2019s a new psychoactive agent on the scene. A study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00275514.2026.2670968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">published last month in Mycologia<\/a> has unearthed new details on how one freaky fungus makes those who ingest it hallucinate teeny, tiny people all around them \u2014 something that no other \u2018shroom is known to do.<\/p>\n<p>A typical magic mushroom contains the compounds psilocybin or psilocin. They take about a half-hour to kick in, and produce well-known psychedelic effects like heightened color perception, pulsating objects or moving geometric patterns in the scenery. Users also experience physiological side effects, such as dilated pupils, elevated heart rate, nausea and impaired coordination.<\/p>\n<p>The Lanmaoa asiatica mushroom is known to produce users one very specific type of hallucination: tiny people. Chris Willemsen \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Not the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/16\/health\/these-lilliputian-mushrooms-will-make-you-hallucinate-tiny-people\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lanmaoa asiatica<\/a>. Most of those who eat it report none of this: they can seem functionally sober and their surroundings remain largely unchanged \u2014 except for the miniature people.<\/p>\n<p>Thus far, it\u2019s the only fungus, let alone food, on the planet known to produce such a hallucination \u2014 and scientists have no idea how it\u2019s doing that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven to this day science doesn\u2019t understand what\u2019s going on in the brain to cause this, or how to treat it, and this mushroom is the only thing that we currently know of to reliably produce this effect,\u201d said University of Utah researcher Colin Domnauer in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/chemistry\/it-sounds-so-impossible-student-studying-fungus-that-makes-users-hallucinate-tiny-people-may-be-on-the-verge-of-a-scientific-breakthrough\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">new interview with Livescience<\/a>, adding that the gnome-like beings appear after about 12 to 24 hours and may stick around for several days to follow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese aren\u2019t like some vague hallucinations, these are like three-dimensionally-rendered, highly-detailed figures inhabiting your exterior world. And they\u2019re also interacting with objects in the real world \u2014 like crawling up chairs and tables or under doorways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>L. asiatica, a type of bolete mushroom, is native to pine forests in both southwestern China and the northern Philippines, where it\u2019s wild-harvested and sold in local markets for typical culinary use. Yet, despite decades of anecdotal reports of hallucinations \u2014 usually as a result of undercooking the ingredient \u2014 the species became known to science only about 10 years ago, according to Domnauer, a preeminent expert on the genus Lanmaoa.<\/p>\n<p>Varieties of Lanmaoa mushrooms are sold in markets across Asia for culinary use \u2014 though their undercooked or raw form is known to send consumers on a psychedlic trip that could last for days. Colin Domnauer<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe little people are said to typically like teasing, playing with or harassing the person seeing them,\u201d said Domnauer. <\/p>\n<p>Yet, no one seems surprised by this, he explained. \u201cEveryone knows that this mushroom has this property and can make you see little people, but they\u2019ll continue to eat it anyway, because they\u2019re just not afraid of that effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just how that effect is produced is what Domnauer\u2019s reserach is all about. Where research into psilocybin has exploded in recent decades, the effects of L. asiatica are woefully understudied \u2014 likely due to the fact that scientists have not yet been able to isolate and name the psychoactive compounds that\u2019s causing them. <\/p>\n<p>Colin Domnauer is a postdoctoral student at the University of Utah who studies the effects of Lanmaoa asiatica. Colin Domnauer<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the ingredient in L. asiatica that makes users see tiny people \u2014 also knows as Lilliputian hallucinations after the miniscule Lilliput people depicted in Jonathan Swift\u2019s 1726 novel Gulliver\u2019s Travels \u2014 is completely unknown to science. Donmauer hopes to change that by sequencing the genome of every mushroom in the Lanmaoa group.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas the genes responsible for synthesizing psychoactive compounds in typical magic mushrooms are well-documented, Donmauer\u2019s team found none in L. asiatica.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere weren\u2019t even any known psychoactive compounds, so it seemed like this must be some new hallucinogenic compound waiting to be discovered, because there\u2019s nothing that matches anything in our database.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there is no compound on scientific record that is known to produce Lilliputian hallucinations. Jolanda \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Currently, tests on mice have narrowed their search down to \u201ca few candidates,\u201d but they\u2019re still a ways off from determining which one that is \u2014 and whether it impacts humans the same way.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Donmauer can only speak to reports of L. asiatica\u2018s effects. He has no intention of tripping on raw shroom anytime soon, and potentially losing days of work for the sake of first-hand experience.<\/p>\n<p> For now, he\u2019ll sticking to the fully cooked version. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt tastes very good and has a great flavor.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Magic mushrooms?
