I have a pretty solid router, but there\u2019s this one corner of my apartment that gets almost no signal. And yes, that\u2019s after trying all the usual tricks to improve the coverage<\/a>. So a Wi-Fi extender felt like the only viable option. But instead of buying one, I ended up using an old Android phone as a Wi-Fi extender. The whole setup took just a few minutes, and, most importantly, it completely eliminated the dead zones in my home.<\/p>\n

A Wi-Fi extender is pretty much what it sounds like. It picks up your router\u2019s signal and rebroadcasts it. You can find a decent one for anywhere from $30 to well over $100, but the thing is, the cheap ones are usually garbage. The expensive ones work fine, but then again, they\u2019re expensive for what they do. And that\u2019s exactly why using an old Android phone as a Wi-Fi extender makes so much sense.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve been using Android phones for long enough, you probably remember the days when enabling the Wi-Fi hotspot turned off Wi-Fi and vice versa. This meant using a phone as a Wi-Fi extender simply wasn\u2019t possible. Well, that\u2019s no longer the case with most phones launched in the past few years. They can receive and transmit Wi-Fi signals simultaneously. <\/p>\n

So yes, if you\u2019ve got a phone from around 2019 or later, it almost certainly has the hardware to pull it off. It can connect to your router like any other device and share it via its hotspot.<\/p>\n

Get your Wi-Fi extender up and running in seconds<\/p>\n

Setting up your old phone as a Wi-Fi extender is as easy as it sounds. Once you\u2019ve connected it to your main Wi-Fi, head to Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering and turn on Mobile Hotspot. This is the easy part, but we\u2019re not done yet. <\/p>\n

The right hotspot settings can make all the difference. For starters, most phones can broadcast signals in both 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands. Of course, 5GHz is faster and better if you only want to broadcast over a small area. But if you want the maximum range, go with the 2.4GHz band. <\/p>\n

You can even enable the Wi-Fi 6 standard<\/a> from the same menu. It\u2019s not necessary, but if your devices receiving the signals support that standard, they\u2019ll get better speeds. Finally, turn off Power saving mode and disable the option that automatically turns off the hotspot after a few minutes of inactivity. Also, if your phone has a working SIM, turn off mobile data. <\/p>\n

Once you\u2019re done with the setup, the only thing left is to find a good spot for your phone. This is important because if you place it too close to the router, you\u2019re not really extending anything. Similarly, if you put it too far towards the dead zone, the phone itself gets a weak signal, which means everything connected to it gets an even weaker one. The sweet spot is usually somewhere between the router and the area with poor coverage. And, of course, if you need the hotspot running around the clock, make sure there\u2019s a power outlet nearby so you can keep your phone plugged in. <\/p>\n

An old Android phone is undoubtedly a convenient way to fix dead Wi-Fi zones. One thing you will notice, though, is that speeds are nowhere near what you usually get from your main router. That\u2019s just how a repeater works. The phone is receiving a signal and rebroadcasting it at the same time. So if your main router is giving you 300 Mbps, your phone\u2019s hotspot might deliver half that speed or even less. It all depends on your phone\u2019s hardware, what Wi-Fi band you\u2019re using, its distance from the router, and the device that\u2019s receiving the signal.<\/p>\n

Sure, a dedicated Wi-Fi extender may deliver better performance, and a mesh network is even better<\/a> since your devices don\u2019t need to switch between the main and the secondary Wi-Fi networks. Still, if all you need to do is stream and browse, your old phone is more than good enough. <\/p>\n

Most importantly, your old phone costs nothing and can do more than just rebroadcast Wi-Fi signals. It can pull double duty as a smart home dashboard, a music player, a bedside clock, a digital photo frame, or even a security camera. That’s a lot of value from something that would otherwise be gathering dust in a drawer.<\/p>\n

Wi-Fi extenders always felt like a marketing gimmick rather than a real solution to me. The cheap ones are often disappointing, while the good ones cost enough that you start wondering if it makes more sense to upgrade the router<\/a> instead.
