PARIS \u2013 France has recorded 1,000 excess deaths during the blistering heat wave sweeping Europe<\/a>, the \u200bpublic health agency said on Sunday, warning that \u200cthe true figure was likely to be higher.<\/p>\n

Detailing its preliminary count of excess deaths<\/a>, Sante Publique said most of the \u200bfatalities<\/a> involved older people and that it expected \u200bthe mortality rate to rise as more information \u2060became available about deaths in residential care and homes.<\/p>\n

Europeans \u200bhave been enduring\u00a0blistering conditions<\/a>\u00a0during a heat wave that has \u200bbeen linked to dozens of deaths \u2014 shattering records, disrupting power generation and damaging infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Scientists have said the heat wave<\/a>, which began on \u200bJune 20, was the worst recorded in Europe<\/a>, \u200bwhere the\u00a0climate\u00a0is changing faster than the global average.<\/p>\n

Extreme heat eases in France<\/p>\n

The heat wave has been moving east. <\/p>\n

But while France\u2019s weather agency said the extreme heat<\/a> had diminished in most parts of the country, some areas in the \u200bnortheast were still \u200bunder a \u2060heat wave advisory.<\/p>\n

Health Minister Stephanie Rist told La Tribune newspaper that the impact of \u200bthe heat wave could linger for as long \u200bas ten \u2060days after the weather had ebbed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe episode is not finished,\u201d she told broadcaster BFM.<\/p>\n
