\n The Supreme Court on Monday rejected<\/a> President Donald Trump\u2019s attempt to immediately fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.\n <\/p>\n

\n Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the opinion for a 5-4 majority.\n <\/p>\n

\n The ruling is the most consequential case for the Fed\u2019s future, for now fending off the politicization of an institution that\u2019s responsible for being a technocratic steward of the US economy. In the end, the decision \u2014 which came months after the court struck down the president\u2019s sweeping emergency tariffs<\/a> \u2014 suggests that the longstanding principle of independence for the Fed was a line that not even Trump could cross.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cUnder our precedents, Cook was entitled to notice and some opportunity to respond prior to her termination. That comes down to the words Congress chose, first in 1913, and then again in 1935,\u201d Roberts wrote. \u201cOf course, that is not to say that a Federal Reserve Governor is entitled to an audience with the President or a full-blown judicial trial.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cInstead, all that is required is notice \u2018to the officer of the charges made against him\u2019 and \u2018an opportunity to be heard in his defense,\u2019\u201d the chief justice added.\n <\/p>\n

\n Roberts wrote that the \u201cultimate question of whether the presi\u00addent can remove Cook for cause will depend in part on the underlying facts.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
