The US supreme court<\/a> on Monday declined Donald Trump\u2019s request to review a New York jury\u2019s 2023 verdict that found him liable for sexually \u200babusing writer E Jean Carroll, and then defaming her.<\/p>\n

The justices did not provide an<\/a> explanation or reasoning, and no public dissents were noted. The decision leaves intact the $5m civil judgment against Trump that was returned by the jury after the two-week trial<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n

The supreme court\u2019s decision comes after a three-judge court panel at the second US circuit court of appeals in Manhattan upheld <\/a>the jury\u2019s verdict in 2024<\/a>, andrejected Trump\u2019s arguments \u2060that the trial was unfair because the judge let jurors hear evidence of his alleged past sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n

In 2025, Trump, who has repeatedly denied the allegations<\/a> against him, asked<\/a> the supreme court to review the case and overturn<\/a> the verdict. Lawyers for Carroll asked the judges to reject the request.<\/p>\n

Trump reacted to the supreme court\u2019s decision by writing on Truth Social<\/a>: \u201cSurprisingly, the Supreme Court declined to \u2018review\u2019 a Fake Case brought against me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roberta Kaplan, Carroll\u2019s attorney, also issued a statement in response to the decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s supreme court decision affirms once and for all the jury\u2019s unanimous verdict that President Donald J Trump sexually assaulted and defamed E Jean Carroll<\/a>,\u201d Kaplan said. \u201cHis multiple efforts to appeal that verdict have all failed and today\u2019s ruling ends his quest to avoid accountability for his actions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has been battling Carroll, a former advice columnist for Elle magazine, since she \u2060published an excerpt from her memoir in 2019 in which she alleged that Trump had raped her in the 1990s in \u200ba Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in Manhattan. \u200cShe filed the lawsuit three years later. Trump has repeatedly denied Carroll\u2019s claims and accused her of lying.<\/p>\n

Carroll also filed a separate defamation suit against Trump and in 2024, a separate Manhattan jury ordered Trump to pay Carroll $83.3m<\/a> in damages for defaming <\/a>her in 2019.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s lawyers are currently appealing that ruling, and have said<\/a> that they intend to ask the supreme court to hear that appeal as well.<\/p>\n

Last September, a federal appeals court upheld the $83.3m<\/a> jury award. Trump is challenging the $83m award on several grounds, according to the Associated Press<\/a>, including asserting \u201cabsolute immunity\u201d for comments he made about Carroll while president.<\/p>\n

In May, a federal appeals court ruled<\/a> that Trump would not have to pay the $83.3m judgment until the supreme court either reviews the case or rejects to take it up.
