Metallica<\/a>\u00a0have covered\u00a0Tom Jones<\/a>\u2019 \u2018Delilah\u2019 at Cardiff\u2019s Principality Stadium, despite the song being banned from the venue.<\/p>\n

The metal icons played the Welsh capital last night (June 28) as part of\u00a0the final UK run of their ongoing \u2018M72\u2019 world tour<\/a>, and used their mid-set \u2018Kirk and Rob Doodle\u2019 section to nod to one of\u00a0Wales\u2019\u00a0most famous sons.<\/p>\n

Their choice of cover is\u00a0somewhat loaded, however, as in 2023,\u00a0the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) banned\u00a0the\u00a01968\u00a0hit\u00a0from being\u00a0performed by choirs\u00a0in the stadium\u00a0at Wales internationals <\/a>due to\u00a0its\u00a0references to domestic violence.<\/p>\n

The song\u2019s lyrics, by Barry Mason, were written from the perspective of a man who kills his partner after seeing her with another man.<\/p>\n

The WRU said three years ago that they \u201ccondemn domestic violence of any kind\u201d, adding: \u201cWe have previously sought advice from subject matter experts on the issue of censoring the song and we are respectfully aware that it is problematic and upsetting to some supporters because of its subject matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones later hit back at the decision to band the song during a show at Cardiff Castle in July 2023, telling the crowd: \u201cYou can\u2019t stop us singing \u2018Delilah\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey may stop the choir from singing it, but they haven\u2019t stopped the crowd,\u201d he added. \u201cKeep on singing it \u2013 and I\u2019ll keep on singing it too.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u2018Kirk and Rob Doodle\u2019 has become a regular part of Metallica\u2019s live shows in recent years, giving Hammett and Trujillo a mid-set slot to play loose bass-and-guitar jams, often paying tribute to local musical heroes. In the past, they have played\u00a0Rammstein<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Sonne\u2019 in Berlin,\u00a0ABBA<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Dancing Queen\u2019 in Sweden\u00a0and\u00a0a-ha<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Take\u00a0On\u00a0Me\u2019 in Norway.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month,\u00a0they covered The Pogues\u2019 \u2018Dirty Old Town\u2019 during their second show in Dublin, before taking on The\u00a0Proclaimers\u2019 \u2018I\u2019m\u00a0Gonna\u00a0Be (500 Miles)\u2019 and Nazareth\u2019s \u2018Hair\u00a0Of\u00a0The\u00a0Dog\u2019 in Glasgow<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The band\u2019s UK run will continue with two nights at London Stadium on July 3 and 5. The first night will feature support from Gojira and Knocked Loose, while the second will feature Pantera and Avatar.\u00a0Find any remaining tickets\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The band recently released \u2018Reload (Remastered)\u2019<\/a>,\u00a0an expanded reissue of their 1997 album featuring previously unreleased demos, rough mixes, live performances and more.<\/p>\n

Kirk Hammett also recently made headlines after\u00a0falling from the stage during \u2018Seek & Destroy\u2019 in Dublin<\/a>. He later joked about the moment on Instagram, captioning a clip: \u201cSlip & Destroy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The incident came shortly after\u00a0Hammett drew criticism from Taylor Swift fans for wearing a T-shirt<\/a>\u00a0reading \u201cTaylor Swift Is A CIA Psyop\u201d during Metallica\u2019s June 13 show in Budapest.<\/p>\n

In a four-star review of Metallica\u2019s \u2018M72\u2019 tour opener in Amsterdam<\/a>,\u00a0NME\u00a0wrote: \u201cMetallica have always been a gateway band for heavy music, but there\u2019s a renewed excitement around them now. Tonight\u2019s surprising, ambitious and giddy gig matches that energy at every turn.\u201d<\/p>\n
