{"id":733860,"date":"2026-06-30T00:38:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T00:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/733860\/"},"modified":"2026-06-30T00:38:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T00:38:08","slug":"sculptor-james-hubbells-san-diego-county-home-accepted-into-historic-artists-homes-and-studios-san-diego-union-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/733860\/","title":{"rendered":"Sculptor James Hubbell\u2019s San Diego County home accepted into Historic Artists\u2019 Homes and Studios \u2013 San Diego Union-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ilan Lael Foundation, a nonprofit organization and the home and art compound of late artist James Hubbell, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/savingplaces.org\/press-center\/media-resources\/national-trust-announces-13-new-sites-to-the-historic-artists-homes-and-studios-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accepted<\/a> into Historic Artists\u2019 Homes and Studios (HAHS).<\/p>\n<p>HAHS is dedicated to preserving sites that were the homes and working studios of American artists. The Ilan Lael Foundation joins 93 sites across 32 states that are part of the program. The foundation is located at the former home of Hubbell in the unincorporated East County community of Santa Ysabel, just outside of Julian.<\/p>\n<p>Hubbell, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2024\/05\/20\/james-hubbell-san-diegos-iconic-sculptor-artist-naturalist-and-peace-advocate-dies-at-92\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who passed away in May 2024<\/a>, was an iconic San Diegan sculptor, artist, naturalist and peace advocate whose home has gained interest from the international art community. His sculptures and stained-glass works were organically inspired and rooted in Hubbell\u2019s belief that art and nature exist in harmony with one another. His ethereal home, which utilizes found natural materials, has been described as \u201chabitable sculptures\u201d that are known to resemble Hobbit houses from the \u201cLord of the Rings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"This drafting studio is among the artistic buildings at the Ilan-Lael Foundation property. (Courtesy Ilan-Lael Foundation)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are beyond honored to have received this designation that will help us continue to commemorate Jim\u2019s legacy,\u201d said a statement from Marianne Gerdes, executive director at the Ilan Lael Foundation. \u201cSince his passing, we have strived to uphold his belief that art and nature work harmoniously. The property has always been the best hidden gem of San Diego, and now the recognition helps us to share the magic with the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The HAHS program is part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and describes itself as the only national organization focused on presenting site-specific narratives of American art history.
