Gakpo and girlfriend, Noa van der Bij, announced that the couple recently had a miscarriage.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of Netherlands\u2019 Round of 32 game against Morocco, Gakpo revealed the news via his Instagram Story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an incredibly difficult time for our family,\u201d Gakpo noted in an Instagram Story during the World Cup which reposted van der Bij\u2019s announcement, <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/dutch-soccer-star-cody-gakpo-announces-pregnancy-loss-amid-world-cup-12008166\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">per People<\/a>. \u201cWe kindly ask for privacy and space. Thank you for understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van der Bij posted the initial announcement to her Instagram Story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy,\u201d van der Bij explained, via People.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cody Gakpo &amp; Partner, Noa van der Bij, Announced Their Pregnancy in May<\/p>\n<p>The couple initially announced their pregnancy in May 30, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DY9UlsmAB1E\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Instagram post<\/a>. Gakpo and van der Bij are also the proud parents to one son, Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur little family is growing \ud83e\udd0d,\u201d van der Bij said at the time. \u201cWe can\u2019t wait to meet you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cody Gakpo Scored His 3rd Goal of World Cup in the Netherlands-Morocco Match<\/p>\n<p>Gakpo opted to remain with the Netherlands team and has been one of the squad\u2019s best players, scoring three goals thus far in the World Cup. The Netherlands standout not only played after the announcement but scored his third goal of the FIFA tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the tragic news, van der Bij had been giving fans a glimpse of life in the United States during the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have done what was within our power in terms of support, as players, as staff,\u201d Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman said of the tragedy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/sports\/soccer\/cody-gakpo-netherlands-world-cup-team-supports-striker-loss-unborn-son-rcna352253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">per NBC News.<\/a> \u201cOf course, the first few days he had the freedom to go out to his family and be with them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe dealt with it very well; there was never a moment where he said, \u2018I want to go back, I want to be with the family.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cody Gakpo &amp; Girlfriend, Noa, Are Also the Proud Parents to Son, Samuel<\/p>\n<p>Van der Bij frequently gives fans a look at the couple\u2019s life off the pitch. Back in 2025, Gakpo\u2019s partner took to Instagram to celebrate their son\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne year ago, you came into our lives and changed everything in the most beautiful way,\u201d van der Bij remarked in an April 25, 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DI3MmkbMK9V\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Instagram post.<\/a> \u201cToday we celebrate you \u2014 our little happy boy, our everything. We love you forever Samu\u00ebl Seth \ud83e\ude75\ud83c\udf82.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Virgil van Dijk on Cody Gakpo News: \u2018I Have Lots of Respect for the Way He &amp; His Family Are Handling This\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Star Virgil van Dijk is the face of the Netherlands football team. The legend offered his support for Gakpo ahead of the Netherlands-Morocco game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important thing is to ask: \u2018What do you need?\u2019\u201d van Dijk said of Gakpo, per NBC News. \u201cIt\u2019s awful news and it shows that football is secondary. There are more important things in life. It\u2019s very sad but Cody deals with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s very mature, very adult. I have lots of respect for the way he and his family are handling this.
