The report listed AIDS, which is caused by HIV, as the cause and chronic polysubstance use \u2014  using more than one drug or substance at the same time or within a short period \u2014 as a \u201csignificant condition.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Chase\u2019s father, John David Schwallier, told the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/17\/arts\/daveigh-chase-dead.html?eafs_enabled=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New York Times<\/a> shortly after his daughter\u2019s death that she died of complications from bacterial meningitis and a blood infection. He told the outlet that Chase had battled with drug addiction and was homeless before her death.<\/p>\n<p>Chase began her Hollywood career in the late 1990s, with minor roles in popular TV series including \u201cSabrina the Teenage Witch,\u201d \u201cCharmed\u201d and \u201cER,\u201d and starred in multiple beloved films at the turn of the century. She played Samantha, the younger sister of Jake Gyllenhaal\u2019s Donnie Darko, in the 2001 cult classic of the same name. <\/p>\n<p>The same year Chase voiced Lilo in \u201cLilo &amp; Stitch,\u201d she also played the iconic ghost girl Samara Morgan in the horror flick \u201cThe Ring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2002-oct-27-ca-q-a27-story.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chase told The Times<\/a> in 2002 that she took her own voice \u201cand put this freaky twist on it\u201d to play the character.
