Typical of Scandinavian design<\/a>, these new looks are less about \u2018wow\u2019 visual statements and more about subtle (but no less thoughtful) shifts in styling. With the biggest interior design trends<\/a> encompassing everything from tactile surfaces to whimsical embellishments, Nordic style now offers as much for the maximalist as it does the minimalist \u2014 all while holding onto its innate sense of calm.<\/p>\n

Nordic designers love embracing the region\u2019s natural materials. Pale birch and washed oak, plus smooth stone and slubby textiles, are hallmarks of the Scandi look, but there\u2019s a shift toward texture-led spaces as opposed to purely material ones.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaterial remains consistent, but changes in texture add depth, shadow, and visual interest,\u201d explains interior designer Kashi Shikunova<\/a>, founder of the Scandi-inspired YAM Studio.<\/p>\n

\u201cRather than introducing lots of different materials, it\u2019s about keeping your palette simple and layering textures<\/a> together to create richness in a more subtle and cohesive way,\u201d says Kashi.<\/p>\n

The designer used fluted detailing on the shelving doors<\/a> in the project above, making the wood a point of interest without introducing additional materials. \u201cSwitching the finish creates a welcoming look, especially alongside tactile fabrics that soften the crisp joinery and make the space feel more inviting,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n

These pieces have long been used by designers for contrast beside more standard, rectangular shapes, but they\u2019re now becoming a default option rather than an accent.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a region that has always celebrated sculptural forms, we\u2019re noticing these pieces combined together rather than working as standalone statements,\u201d says Nanna Liv<\/a>, creative director of London-based House 44.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen pieces share a common visual harmony, there\u2019s a greater sense of flow in a space,\u201d the interior designer explains. \u201cThis is a shift where forms, materials, and proportions are now more in conversation with one another, working to create an effortlessly balanced look.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStripes have always belonged in Scandinavian interiors,\u201d says Dorothea Gundtoft<\/a>, the writer, curator, and author of New Nordic Design<\/a>. \u201cThis region loves pattern, but with discipline, and you can\u2019t get more graphic and orderly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat feels fresh now is the stripe being interpreted in a softer palette,\u201d says Dorothea. \u201cUpholstery fabrics in colors like taupe, faded gray, and muted brown are reflecting a new, quieter approach in Scandinavian design.\u201d<\/p>\n

These shades allow a piece\u2019s form and materials to share some of the spotlight, softening even the boldest, widest stripes to look and feel more livable in the long term. \u201cToday, the calm, rhythmic, and easy-to-live-with approach feels chic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scandinavian design is moving toward a more expressive style. \u201cNordic interiors value simplicity above all else, but today\u2019s designers are also increasingly embracing visible craftsmanship, irregular finishes, and natural variation,\u201d explains Kai Pryce<\/a>, co-founder of Att Pynta.<\/p>\n

Indeed, this year\u2019s 3daysofdesign<\/a> fair saw the iconic Danish brand &Tradition focus minds in Copenhagen with an exhibition highlighting \u2018the enduring marks of design, craft, and culture\u2019. Elsewhere, we spotted vases handcrafted from steel as well as wooden stools with joints left purposefully exposed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis reflects our growing desire for authenticity and individuality,\u201d suggests Kai. \u201cDesigners are reacting to this by celebrating organic forms, textured surfaces, and hand-finished details, creating spaces that feel more layered, personal, and lived-in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scandinavian design brands<\/a> have created some of the most timeless pieces of furniture and lighting, so it\u2019s no surprise that blending these design classics with more contemporary elements works so well. The trend worth paying attention to, though, is less the rise of vintage and more how well these pieces slot in with the \u2018new\u2019.<\/p>\n

Rather than making a vintage piece the cornerstone of your space, it should be a useful, hard-working element within it. \u201cThe ability to combine contemporary architecture and modern furniture with vintage pieces, without anything feeling forced, is key,\u201d explains Sophie Pringle<\/a>. \u201cMix periods confidently but edit carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the space above, the interior designer has used a classic Utrecht chair and vintage timber sideboard alongside more restrained pieces and other practical essentials. \u201cIf your space feels lived-in rather than styled, it will feel complete,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

In Scandi homes, sofas are emerging out of corners and drifting away from the wall. \u201cOne of the biggest shifts we\u2019re seeing is the sofa being pulled right into the room itself,\u201d says Louise Mengel L\u00e6s\u00f8<\/a>, head of design at Wendelbo.<\/p>\n

While the Livingetc team noticed sofa islands<\/a> having a moment earlier this year, you don\u2019t need to have a sprawling space to make a floating sofa<\/a> work. \u201cEven in smaller homes, this move is about subtly rethinking your layout to make it more inviting and open,\u201d says Louise.<\/p>\n

\u201cRather than treating them as something to sit just around the edge of a space, sofas are becoming the piece to define a room,” she adds. “Modular designs are particularly effective as they allow for creative, flexible compositions no matter the size of your space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Usually prized for its restraint and functionality, Scandi design is showing a little more of its OTT side. \u201cColor and playfulness are important trademarks of Scandinavian living,\u201d says Anders Fardig<\/a>, founder of Design House Stockholm.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe difference now is how we use it,\u201d he suggests. \u201cRather than allowing color and pattern to become white noise, they become something to admire and appreciate because they\u2019re not constantly present. We bring them in through details, every now and then.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swedish ceramicist Lisa Larson\u2019s decorative birds, originally created in the 1960s, were showcased as part of Anders\u2019 showcase at this year\u2019s 3daysofdesign and exemplify this use of creativity and color. \u201cThey\u2019re a simple way to make someone happy,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n
