{"id":734387,"date":"2026-06-30T07:19:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T07:19:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/734387\/"},"modified":"2026-06-30T07:19:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T07:19:12","slug":"bug-scuba-suits-allow-roaches-to-operate-underwater-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/734387\/","title":{"rendered":"Bug scuba suits allow roaches to operate underwater: study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As if roaches weren\u2019t hard enough to kill already.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists in Asia have devised 3D-printed scuba suits that allow cockroaches to breathe underwater for up to three hours, potentially enabling these waterbugs to scout disaster areas and even \u2014 gasp \u2014 venture into the cosmos, per a skin-crawling study in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-026-74235-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Nature Communications.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur new insect diving suit works like the oxygen tank used by human divers,\u201d said the study\u2019s lead author, Professor Hirotaka Sato from NTU Singapore\u2019s School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, <a href=\"https:\/\/smbtech.au\/news\/at-last-top-asian-universities-make-diving-suit-for-cyborg-cockroaches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">SMBTech reported.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sato and his team had previously demonstrated that Madagascar hissing cockroaches could be remotely piloted by installing\u00a0electrodes\u00a0in their sensory organs, according to New Scientist<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2531894-remote-controlled-cockroach-swarm-can-now-breathe-underwater\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">.<\/a> This level of control was so precise that they could make swarms of the robo-roaches coordinate, paving the way toward their ultimate goal of creating organic rescue \u201cdrones\u201d that could scour disaster zones for survivors.<\/p>\n<p>Hirotaka Sato holds a cyborg Madagascar hissing cockroach while flanked by his team. The subjects didn\u2019t take well in water, hindering their ability to navigate flooded areas.<\/p>\n<p>To circumvent this limitation, the scientists outfitted the cyborg bug with a 3D printed, watertight resin suit that generates oxygen and provides it to the critters\u2019 spiracles \u2014 breathing holes \u2014 allowing them to operate both aquatically and on land.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of outfitting the roaches with a human-style oxygen tank, the researchers supplied the suit with a cocktail of hydrogen peroxide and manganese dioxide that reacts to form absorbable O2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt (the suit) generates oxygen and delivers it directly to the insect\u2019s breathing holes, allowing the cyborg cockroach to survive and move in underwater or low-oxygen environments,\u201d Sato said. FAN, Z., KAI, K., SONG, K. et al<\/p>\n<p>Armed with the aquatic exoskeleton, cockroaches were able to excel during the amphibious rescue tests, which were conducted in plastic tubes that simulated flooded tunnels and other low-oxygen environments.<\/p>\n<p>The hardy insects could scuttle for up to 3 hours at a time while nearly a foot underwater sans suffering any adverse effects. They also attained speeds of up to 78.4 millimeters per second \u2014 just 10mm slower than their average terrestrial velocity.<\/p>\n<p>The suit allowed the cockroaches to move for up to three hours underwater without suffering any adverse effects. FAN, Z., KAI, K., SONG, K. et al<\/p>\n<p>In other words, roaches can now survive a diving expedition in addition to a nuclear apocalypse.<\/p>\n<p>Sato sees these suits as important \u201cbecause real disaster sites can be challenging after heavy rain or flooding, blocking access routes in the rubble, drains and narrow gaps.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy expanding the operating parameters of our cyborg insects to include underwater travel, we believe that they can enhance search and rescue efforts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>And water\u2019s not the limit for these tiny pantry pillagers, per Sato, who eventually wants to send them to where few roaches have gone before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ultimate goal is to [take this technology to] space,\u201d he declared. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of one step, one big step, towards space suits for cyborg insects. Exploration over the Mars surface, for example.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His team now plans to test the cockroach getups in various harsh environments to see how they handle the vacuum of deep space.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this begs the question of why the researchers wouldn\u2019t just use a robot.<\/p>\n<p>Per scientists, cockroaches are far more efficient because they can operate for long periods without recharging, instead replenishing their own energy stores by harvesting food from the wild.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, Sato has battle-tested bugs in the field before. <\/p>\n<p>His cyborg insects notably assisted in search and rescue operations such as Operation Lionheart following the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that devastated Myanmar in Spring 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"As if roaches weren\u2019t hard enough to kill already.
