{"id":734436,"date":"2026-06-30T07:51:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T07:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/734436\/"},"modified":"2026-06-30T07:51:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T07:51:09","slug":"like-raw-sh-candlelight-oaks-neighbors-fed-up-with-sewage-backup-after-storms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/734436\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Like raw sh**\u2019: Candlelight Oaks neighbors fed up with sewage backup after storms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">HOUSTON \u2013 Residents in a northwest Houston neighborhood say every heavy rain brings more than flooded streets\u2014it brings raw sewage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Neighbors in the Candlelight Oaks community say they\u2019ve dealt with repeated sewage backups over the past several months and even years, claiming wastewater has bubbled out of manholes, flowed into neighborhood streets and, in some cases, backed up into their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cLiterally straight up just raw sh** and the thing people put down the toilet is condoms, purple and pink tampons and more condoms,\u201d resident Monica Mendoza More said. \u201cEvery time it rains really bad for consecutive days, it bubbles over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Mendoza More said the latest backup happened after heavy rain earlier this month, when she says sewage overflowed from a manhole near her home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">She described seeing human waste and other debris in the street and said the smell lingered long after the water receded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Neighbor Rick Scott said the issue has become a recurring concern whenever heavy rain moves through the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIf you ever had gone to an outhouse that\u2019s been sitting out in the sun for a couple of weeks, you\u2019re getting the idea,\u201d Scott said while describing the odor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Scott said he has witnessed sewage erupting from manholes in the neighborhood and worries about children and pets coming into contact with contaminated water after storms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a very healthy environment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Mendoza More said the backups have also become expensive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">She said her family spent about $3,500 on plumbing repairs after one sewage backup, along with additional costs for excavation work and restoring their yard, bringing the total to roughly $4,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Scott said he believes simply cleaning the streets after each event isn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThis is a Band-Aid,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat\u2019s causing it?
