He saw a business.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzx6pun00323b6uvq31gwsx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Soon after, the e-commerce livestreamer in Hangzhou shelled out $30,000 for his first android and turned it into a rental venture.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwqefr000b3b6u8vqpnqln@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Business has been brisk. For 3,000 yuan ($443) a day, customers can hire an android to attract crowds at exhibitions, perform at events or even help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/17\/world\/video\/chinese-humanoid-robot-help-marriage-proposal-hnk-vrtc-digvid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stage a marriage proposal<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwqnp8000d3b6u7ih3184e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But his venture has also revealed what viral videos of dancing, flipping Chinese robots have not: the heavily promoted technology is still years away from replacing human labor, whether on a factory floor or in a household.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwr6ve000g3b6u5uyeo1xl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe market for humanoid sales hasn\u2019t really taken off yet because today\u2019s robots still can\u2019t operate on their own \u2013 they\u2019re basically oversized toys,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwr84q000i3b6u5i5jq9ea@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, Beijing is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/12\/business\/china-five-year-plan-tech-us-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">betting<\/a> billions of dollars on humanoid robots as a strategic technology that could increase productivity as economic growth slows and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/13\/china\/china-population-robots-intl-hnk-dst\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">workforce shrinks<\/a>. And its humanoid robot makers accounted for the vast majority of the global android deliveries last year, far outpacing American competitors like Tesla and FigureAI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzz2jwe00373b6u2mood7cj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Earlier this month, Beijing launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miit.gov.cn\/zwgk\/zcwj\/wjfb\/tz\/art\/2026\/art_f291ccd3da4c47ce95741de63cc088e6.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nationwide initiative<\/a> to accelerate the real-world deployment of humanoids, aiming to deploy them in more than 100 \u201chigh-value application scenarios\u201d by the end of this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwr84q000m3b6uex9puvbg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI do think that by far, the biggest competition for humanoid robots will be from China,\u201d said Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla during a <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tesla.com\/webcast-2026-01-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">January earnings call.<\/a> After repeated delays, Tesla\u2019s humanoid Optimus is slated for production later this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwrjcm000p3b6uk4logkyk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Ai Lin, a defining moment came when humanoid robots took the stage with millions watching at last year\u2019s Spring Festival Gala.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwrt1y000r3b6uy6dbx2we@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt made me realize that robots are likely to see large-scale adoption in the future,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwrt1y000s3b6unm6nj2kh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The spectacle gave rise to self-starters like Ai who sought to cash in on the growing hype. With retail prices starting around $19,000 for entry models and climbing past $100,000 for advanced ones, rentals offer a more accessible option.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwrt1y000t3b6uerp13ljx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Searches for humanoid robots on Chinese social media platforms, and you\u2019ll be met with a flood of influencers advertising rental services. There are now more than 153,000 robot rental businesses in China, according to state-run media.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3picture.jpg\" alt=\"In China, robot rentals are available both in physical stores and, more prominently, through online platforms such as Xianyu, Douyin, and SHAREBOT.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1080\" width=\"1758\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwrt1y000u3b6uwmqc91a5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last year, AGIBOT, one of China\u2019s leading makers, launched a rental subsidiary called SHAREBOT and said the robot rental market could reach $1.5 billion by the end of 2026.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwrt1y000v3b6upyxwp5xw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Through an online platform, customers can rent a humanoid for as low as 3500 yuan ($517) a day, including shipping costs and a human operator who helps control and program the machine. In three months since it launched, it  logged more than 5,500 orders.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwrt1y000w3b6uiedl0ouq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Not only is the rental market a promising source of income, it also enables robots to enter real-world scenarios, said Li Yiyan, CEO of SHAREBOT.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwrt1y000x3b6ueixfh8qr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt ultimately helps robots transition faster from mere exhibition pieces to large-scale deployment,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwrt1y000y3b6u4469lt2z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Similarly inspired by the viral performance, 52-year-old Zhao Xiaohong in Jiangsu province invested in eight humanoids for rentals last year, seeing it as \u201cthe fastest way to monetize the technology in the short term.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwrt1y000z3b6udbl87aho@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But rental business owners like Zhao observed that the rental prices have begun to slide as novelty surrounding these stunt-performing androids fades.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwrt1y00103b6uy58k5wcz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPeople start to feel a sense of fatigue when the technology stagnates and stops advancing, with the market flooded with similar types of robots,\u201d Zhao said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/45621318-81485108-generated-thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"&lt;p&gt;Chinese robots ran against humans in the world\u2019s first humanoid half-marathon. They lost by a mile.&lt;\/p&gt;\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1080\" width=\"1920\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Chinese robots run against humans<\/p>\n<p>        0:45<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwtv5200133b6ufwuzfpbf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nowhere is that gap between spectacle and substance clearer than in Yizhuang, a technology hub in southeastern Beijing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwudn100163b6u1xayyl65@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At a futuristic exhibition center that\u2019s become a regular stop for government-organized tours, robotic dogs perform a traditional Chinese lion dance and a humanoid in a Michael Jordan jersey sinks free throws.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwudn100173b6urdx82rcq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But a short walk away from these stunning showcases lies a separate state-backed facility that offers the reason why robots still can\u2019t do much more than putting on a well-choreographed show.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwuqk000193b6uo50hmy9g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Inside, more than 120 humanoids stand in neat rows, each performing a specific task repeatedly, from sorting packages or changing diapers to scooping popcorn, guided by human trainers with handheld controllers next to them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwurw5001b3b6ujcpqaup0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The establishment of dozens of facilities like this across China reflects one of the central challenges facing the humanoid robotics industry: despite rapid advances in artificial intelligence, robots still lack vast amounts of physical-world data needed to become truly capable workers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwvapp001e3b6u7l13pnz8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chinese humanoid makers pay companies like X-Humanoid up to $150 an hour for physical interaction data, depending on the complexities of these chores, said Jiang Weilai, head of the facility X-Humanoid.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwvbu9001g3b6uceotkyys@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But beyond data, there are also hardware constraints.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwvbu9001h3b6uaja7hf86@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Marco Wang, an analyst focusing on Chinese robotics for technology research firm Interact Analysis, said the technical readiness of dexterous robotics hands, for example, are among the lowest in hardware components.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwvbu9001i3b6ufl6h6vf8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou have to fit a lot of functionality into a component that\u2019s roughly the size and weight of a human joint. Once you pack that many parts into such a small space, heat dissipation becomes a major hurdle,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwvbu9001j3b6unqbehnce@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Because of that, these hands suffer from high production costs, poor durability against impacts, short operational lifespans, and there are no existing solutions that engineers can readily draw upon, Wang added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwvbu9001k3b6ujv0uv6qk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As a result, the vast majority of demand for these robots has been driven by the Chinese government, and only a small number of them have reached factory floors, mostly in pilot projects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwvbu9001l3b6uv8wj9ls6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even among leading manufacturers, productivity still trails human workers. UBTECH, one of China\u2019s largest humanoid robot companies, told CNN its most advanced models can achieve about 80% of human productivity but only in certain tasks such as box stacking and package sorting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwvtg8001o3b6uywqwo3cb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, China is bullish on an automated future.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqzwvwa8001q3b6u4agl01ft@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today, the country\u2019s embrace of the technology is evidenced by the ubiquity of robots. In Hangzhou, robot traffic police are deployed on busy roads guiding traffic. In parks, some people can even be seen walking their humanoids just like pets.
