{"id":735569,"date":"2026-06-30T21:11:40","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T21:11:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/735569\/"},"modified":"2026-06-30T21:11:40","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T21:11:40","slug":"nasa-offers-update-on-30-billion-moon-base","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/735569\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA offers update on $30 billion moon base"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0xa2fk001w29qialdz65q7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA\u2019s moon base plans, conceptualized just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/24\/science\/nasa-ignition-mars-spacecraft-moon-base\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a few months ago<\/a>, are rolling out in earnest as the space agency maps out a strategy to deliver landers, rovers, buggies and other assets to the lunar surface.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0z0z6k00003b6rqecd2lg4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Tuesday, NASA said it will pay about $590 million dollars to three companies \u2014 Astrobotic, Firefly and Intuitive Machines \u2014 for four missions to deliver science instruments and other cargo to the moon. Astrobotic was the only vendor to be awarded two missions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr101n0b000j3b6rexdr0gjf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The agency also floated the possibility of repurposing a Mars rover, nicknamed Promise, for use on the moon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0z0z6k00013b6rzaupenxy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These moves support a broader effort to use robotic vehicles to build up infrastructure that can be used by future human explorers on the moon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0z0z6k00023b6ro3e0ey5u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The deals announced Tuesday are components of what Carlos Garc\u00eda-Gal\u00e1n, NASA\u2019s program executive for the moon base, called \u201cPhase 1\u201d of a plan to build out a permanent lunar settlement where astronauts will live and work. This initial phase is expected to last through 2028 and cost about $10 billion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0z0z6k00033b6rjl6z4cxk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA announced other deals under the first phase of the program last month, including plans to rename three previously contracted missions as \u201cMoon Base\u201d specific. The agency also awarded additional contracts in May \u2014 worth over $1 billion altogether \u2014 for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lunaroutpost.com\/post\/nasa-selects-lunar-outpost-to-deliver-next-gen-crewed-lunar-terrain-vehicle-for-artemis-astronauts-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">building<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astrolab.space\/2026\/05\/26\/nasa-selects-astrolab-to-provide-lunar-rover-for-artemis-astronauts-return-to-the-moon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">buggies<\/a> to drive on the lunar surface and deploying <a href=\"https:\/\/fireflyspace.com\/news\/firefly-aerospace-wins-75-million-nasa-jpl-moonfall-subcontract-to-deliver-drones-to-the-moons-south-pole\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">drones<\/a> to the moon to help map a moon base location, perhaps as soon as 2028.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0z0z6k00043b6r74zgplyn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Phases 2 and 3 \u2014 which include plans to build the first pressurized habitats on the moon and install power generators \u2014 lay out NASA\u2019s vision to continue building up its moon base in the 2030s. Eventually, NASA says it hopes astronauts will live and work in \u201csemi-permanent\u201d settlements.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0z0z6k00053b6r25k8wn7d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s all part of the space agency\u2019s plan to compete with China, whose space program has taken dramatic strides over the past decade. The south pole is highly coveted because it is believed to be home to stores of water ice, which can be converted to rocket fuel or drinking water.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0z2pgn000b3b6rldv8du4g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Blue Origin suffered a major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/28\/science\/blue-origin-rocket-anomaly\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">setback<\/a> in May when one of its New Glenn rockets abruptly exploded on the launchpad, destroying vital infrastructure that will take months to rebuild. It\u2019s not clear how long the Blue Moon launch may be postponed as a result.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0zlu85000h3b6rmkfzq2am@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Tuesday, Garc\u00eda-Gal\u00e1n hinted that the Blue Moon lander may launch on a different vehicle if needed, saying NASA is \u201clooking at other options\u201d in case Blue Origin\u2019s rocket and launchpad work doesn\u2019t meet the agency\u2019s timeline.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11ipv4000l3b6rtcoo1eiw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman made clear in a social media post shortly after the New Glenn incident that the space agency intends to be hands-on with its private-sector partners when hurdles arise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11irib000n3b6r76l023hu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have been saying for months at NASA that we are not going to sit on our hands and wait for the capabilities necessary to achieve the nation\u2019s most pressing objectives,\u201d Isaacman <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NASAAdmin\/status\/2060523381699612973?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a>. \u201cWe are going to take an active role alongside our partners, just as we did in the 1960s, to overcome setbacks, remove obstacles, and deliver the intended outcomes.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11irib000p3b6rdzspqusc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Blue Origin is far from NASA\u2019s only partner, though its Blue Moon lander is substantially larger than most other robotic crafts and is expected to come in two versions \u2014 including one for carrying crew. SpaceX is also working to develop its Starship rocket for astronaut transportation to and from the moon, though the massive vehicle is not yet operational.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11irib000q3b6rqb8zle3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But NASA has a field of other players to tap for delivering cargo to the moon\u2019s surface. Texas-based Firefly is so far the only company to carry out a wholly successful mission, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/01\/science\/blue-ghost-mission-moon-landing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landing<\/a> its Blue Ghost vehicle near the lunar equator last year. Texas-based Intuitive Machines has also twice put landers near the south pole of the moon, though both times the landers tipped over.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11irib000r3b6rnqu5ht3c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA\u2019s flurry of announcements and presentations this year about building a moon base are designed to encourage and spur more innovation from private-sector partners, Garc\u00eda-Gal\u00e1n said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11irib000s3b6riytlevye@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you are in industry and wondering if you need to make that investment to increase your high bay, to increase the number of supply chain vendors that you have \u2014 this is the signal to say: We\u2019re here to stay with this demand, and we\u2019re building a moon base,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R8_5UoAqQ6E&amp;t=412s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told<\/a> CNN during the Space Symposium conference in April.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11irib000u3b6r7zdhs80r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In total, NASA said it expects the moon base to cost about $30 billion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11irib000w3b6riy805mhm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The moon base is integral to NASA\u2019s Artemis program, which has so far already cost <a href=\"https:\/\/oig.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/ct-24-001.pdf?emrc=66499e85d4fda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">roughly<\/a> $100 billion and to date has consisted of one uncrewed test mission and the historic crewed lunar flyby in April. Now, the space agency is now gearing up to send humans back to the moon\u2019s surface for the first time in five decades and eventually build a settlement there. Both the US and China have plans to establish lunar outposts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11irib000x3b6rh3osd2uf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have bolstered efforts to fund lunar exploration by warning about competition with China.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11irib000y3b6rt0cxmuo0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And even as the Trump White House has recommended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/23\/science\/nasa-jared-isaacman-trump-budget-hearing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slashing NASA\u2019s science budget<\/a> by nearly 50%, the administration has sought to boost funding for the moon base in order to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/budget_fy2027.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">establish U.S. dominance<\/a>.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11irib000z3b6r4wwfwdgi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But there\u2019s a long way to go. The path to establishing a permanent lunar settlement is rife with technological, political and ethical questions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11irib00103b6rygc4bwes@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Experts warn that there is currently a dramatic lack of infrastructure on the moon to support such a colony. Even the matter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/30\/science\/lunar-time-zone-scale-nasa-artemis-scn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">keeping the correct time<\/a> on the moon has not been solved for, as seconds tick by slightly faster on the moon than here on Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11irib00113b6rv4jwr0e0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And the funding landscape remains fuzzy. Trump\u2019s Big Beautiful Bill gave about $10 billion to NASA to be doled out over six years, but much of those funds are earmarked for specific purposes.
