MANILA, Philippines \u2014 Alex Eala scored a breakthrough victory at the Wimbledon Championships, racing past Renata Zarazua of Mexico, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the second round early Wednesday (Manila time).<\/p>\n

It was Eala\u2019s first victory in the grass-court Grand Slam tournament, improving on her first-round exit in her main-draw debut last year.<\/p>\n

Seeded for the first time at No. 29, Eala survived a few lengthy exchanges and won five straight games to close out the opening set, 6-1, against her former doubles partner and the world No. 75.<\/p>\n

Backed by a partisan Filipino crowd, Eala carried the momentum into the second set, breaking early before consolidating the break for a 2-0 lead. Zarazua responded with a hold, but Eala remained in control.<\/p>\n

MANILA, Philippines\u2013Alex Eala enters her second Wimbledon main-draw campaign confident she has done everything she could to prepare.<\/p>\n

Eala begins her Grand Slam grass-court bid after a phenomenal buildup that saw her win a WTA 125 title and turn heads with successive upsets at the Berlin Open.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019ve definitely put in the hours. I\u2019ve had the matches, and I\u2019ve had that time on court,\u201d Eala said in an interview with Spot TV.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I couldn\u2019t have come into Wimbledon in better shape. I think I\u2019ve done everything to prepare the best way I could.\u201d<\/p>\n
