Halle Berry\u2019s first husband, former Atlanta Braves right fielder David Justice, opened up about the pair\u2019s three-year marriage in an interview on Matt Barnes\u2019 \u201cAll the Smoke\u201d podcast this week \u2014 and revealed they split up in part because he felt she should \u201ccook, clean, [and be] traditional.\u201d<\/p>\n
The former athlete also admitted the marriage could have worked \u201cif I knew about therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn\u2019t vast,\u201d Justice told Barnes. \u201cSo, I\u2019m looking at my mom \u2014 and I\u2019m a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I\u2019m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, [be] traditional, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n
The pair were married 1993 to 1997, a period that included Berry\u2019s three-episode stint on the series \u201cQueen\u201d as well as her role in \u201cThe Flintstones.\u201d Berry also made \u201cLosing Isaiah\u201d during the same span of time.<\/p>\n
The years that followed included some of her best-loved, including her turn as Storm in \u201cX-Men\u201d and her Academy Award-winning role in 2001\u2019s \u201cMonster\u2019s Ball.\u201d<\/p>\n
The baseball player admitted he\u2019d only been in one relationship prior to dating Berry, which could have impacted his views as well. \u201cThen I\u2019m thinking, \u2018OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?\u2019 At that time, as a young guy \u2014 she don\u2019t cook, don\u2019t clean, don\u2019t really seem like, motherly, and then we start having issues.\u201d<\/p>\n
Berry has since gone on to welcome daughter Nahla with ex Gabriel Aubrey and son Maceo-Robert with ex-husband Olivier Martinez.<\/p>\n
Justice offered up another reason for why the marriage failed: Berry\u2019s work schedule.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe spent a lot of time apart because she was doing movies in this country, that country. And we honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy. If we knew about therapy, we probably could have made it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Justice married Rebecca Villalobos in 2001 and is the father of three children: daughter Raquel and sons JR and Dionisio.<\/p>\n
