When most people think of The Beatles<\/a>, they likely think of songs like\u00a0\u201cI Want To Hold Your Hand\u201d\u00a0or\u00a0\u201cHere Comes The Sun\u201d. While these are great songs, The Beatles experimented with lots of different sounds in their day. Here are a few Beatles songs that might surprise you.<\/p>\n

\u201cHelter Skelter\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHelter Skelter\u201d, which appears on the White Album, is a lot more\u00a0rock \u2018n roll than most Beatles\u2019 songs. When Paul McCartney wrote this one, he was referring to a helter-skelter carnival slide, and not so much Charles Manson.<\/p>\n

He told Barry Miles<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cI was using the symbol of a helter skelter as a ride from the top to the bottom \u2013 the rise and fall of the Roman Empire \u2013 and this was the fall, the demise, the going down. You could have thought of it as a rather cute title but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0since taken on all sorts of ominous overtones because Manson picked it up as an anthem, and since then quite a few punk bands have done it because it is a raunchy rocker.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is actually one of many Beatles songs that have a lot of Indian musical influence. George Harrison wrote his first song in this style when he wrote\u00a0\u201cLove You To\u201d, which appears on The\u00a0Beatles\u2019\u00a0Revolver album.\u00a0\u201cWithin You Without You\u201d\u00a0was his only composition on Sgt. Pepper.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Within You Without You\u2019\u00a0came about after I had spent a bit of time in India and fallen under the spell of the country and its music,\u201d\u00a0he once shared<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cI had brought back a lot of instruments. It was written at Klaus\u00a0Voormann\u2019s\u00a0house in Hampstead after dinner one night. The song came to me when I was playing a pedal harmonium.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy\u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0We Do It In The Road?\u201d<\/p>\n

This is a quirky one. In\u00a0\u201cWhy\u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0We Do It In The Road?\u201d, McCartney compares the sexual relations of animals to humans.\u00a0This one was written after he witnessed two monkeys\u00a0literally doing it in the road while\u00a0in India.<\/p>\n

Speaking with Barry Miles, McCartney answered the very question the song asks. Why\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0we do it\u00a0in\u00a0the road?<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, the answer is\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0civilized,\u00a0and we\u00a0don\u2019t.\u00a0But the song was\u00a0just\u00a0to pose that question,\u201d\u00a0he shared.\u00a0\u201c\u2018Why\u00a0Don\u2019t We Do It In The Road?\u2019\u00a0was a primitive statement to do with sex or to do with freedom,\u00a0really. I like it,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0just\u00a0so outrageous that I like it.\u201d<\/p>\n
