Can you believe that 2006 was 20 years ago? (That was 10 years ago, max…right?) Iconic filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his best film (in my humble opinion), Pan’s Labyrinth. It’s getting a re-release in theaters, so fans can enjoy the lush, dark fantasy movie on the big screen again (or for the first time).<\/p>\n
Del Toro’s magnum opus premiered on May 27, 2006, at the Cannes Film Festival before debuting in Spain<\/a> on Oct. 11 and in Mexico on Oct. 20 that year. Also called El laberinto del fauno in Spanish, the film had a limited run in the US starting on Dec. 29, 2006, before a wide release on Jan. 19, 2007. In total, it grossed approximately $83.8 million globally on a budget of $19 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n Pan’s Labyrinth follows an imaginative young girl in 1944 Francoist Spain, who meets “a faun who tells her she’s a princess and that she must prove her worthiness by completing three dangerous tasks.” The universally lauded film stars Ivana Baquero as Ofelia, Sergi L\u00f3pez as Vidal, Maribel Verd\u00fa as Mercedes, Doug Jones as Fauno, Ariadna Gil as Carmen, and \u00c1lex Angulo as Doctor Ferreiro.<\/p>\n Del Toro directed from his own screenplay. Fellow Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n produced Pan’s Labyrinth alongside del Toro.<\/p>\n On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, the film currently boasts a 95% on the Tomatometer and a 91% on the Popcornmeter. Critically, it was well-received. It even has a 98\/100 score on Metacritic, making it the best-reviewed movie of the 2000s on the site<\/a>.<\/p>\n Today, Cineverse, which acquired the North American distribution rights for Pan’s Labyrinth, unveiled a trailer to promote its highly anticipated re-release in theaters.
