{"id":738350,"date":"2026-07-02T05:51:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T05:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/738350\/"},"modified":"2026-07-02T05:51:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T05:51:12","slug":"ohio-authorities-rescue-16-children-confined-to-one-room-for-four-years-ohio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/738350\/","title":{"rendered":"Ohio authorities rescue 16 children confined to one room for four years | Ohio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Sixteen children were rescued from a dilapidated home in rural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ohio\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ohio<\/a> after being confined to just one room in \u201cdeplorable conditions\u201d for much of the past four years, authorities said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The children, who officials said are from the same family and were living in squalor with human waste all around, ranged in age from one and a half to 18 and included boys and girls. Some of them were unable to speak and one \u2013 an 18-year-old who was developmentally disabled \u2013 could not even spell her name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cMost of our livestock was kept in better conditions than the children,\u201d Vinton county sheriff Ryan Cain said at a news conference, describing conditions with a high presence of bacteria and human faeces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cJust a disgusting scene,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The children\u2019s parents and two grandparents were each charged with 16 counts of second-degree felony child endangerment because it involves \u201cserious physical harm\u201d, said Vinton county prosecuting attorney William Archer. He also stressed that this was not a human trafficking case but an \u201cintra-family situation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Authorities discovered the children while carrying out a search warrant in an unrelated investigation, Ohio attorney general Andy Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p>Debris is seen inside the home where authorities say they removed 16 children and arrested four adults in Hamden, Ohio. Photograph: Carolyn Kaster\/AP<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t know there were going to be 16 kids there,\u201d said Wilson, who described what he saw at the home in the tiny village of Hamden, which sits in one of Ohio\u2019s poorest counties, as \u201cpure evil\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The \u201chorrific\u201d scene, Wilson said, was the worst he had encountered in his entire career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cIt\u2019s the type of thing that we\u2019re not used to seeing here in America,\u201d Wilson said, adding that nearly 24 hours later he still \u201ccan\u2019t get the smell off of me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The sheriff said it appears the children spent most of their time in a room that was roughly 12ft x 12ft. He did not disclose how they were kept inside the home, but said authorities did not find any cages in the house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Seven of the children were transported to hospitals in Columbus and two were flown to level one trauma centers by helicopters. One child was in critical condition on Tuesday and had to be intubated, Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThey looked like almost feral animals,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Gary Siders Jr, Gary Siders Sr, Christina Siders and Elizabeth Siders appeared in court on Wednesday where a judge entered not guilty pleas on their behalf and their bond was set at $300,000 each.<\/p>\n<p>Items, including a high chair, are seen in the home in Ohio.  Photograph: Carolyn Kaster\/AP<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Investigators said members of the family had moved around southern Ohio over the past two decades and that it looks like they avoided setting up medical and government records. The children were also not enrolled in school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThey were pretty adept at keeping these kids out of sight and away from investigators\u2019 eyes,\u201d Wilson said, adding that it seemed as though no one outside the family knew about the children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Neighbors in Hamden, which has a population of less than 1,000 people and is about 80 miles south-east of Columbus, were shocked to hear that there were children living in that house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Joseph Stewart, 60, told the Associated Press he saw \u201cno kids at all\u201d since the family moved in. \u201cIt\u2019s a sad situation,\u201d he said.
